AY Race Report 4

All hands back on deck at Samui Regatta
By AY MultiMedia
May 30th, Koh Samui, Thailand: After the lay day to relax and regroup, all the crews were back out on the water for the penultimate day of racing. As the North Westerly breeze is still hanging in, PRO Ross Chisholm decided on a short windward/leeward race for crews to reacclimatize themselves, before embarking on a 32nm passage race, across to Ko Phangan, then around Ko Tae Nok before returning through the Samui Strait and back to the finish line. The boats that enjoy long asymmetric spinnaker rides finally got enough wind to answer their prayers. They certainly aren't here to play games or make up the numbers, its serious business out there, with 20 teams including four highly fancied 52 footers that every regatta would like to have competing plus eight evenly matched "Flying 40's" battling it out around the course. Today is make or break day and the leading contenders want to drive home their advantage.

Once again, Frank Pong's Dibley custom 76 Jelik, flew around the short course to claim the daily double. Third in the passage race and what seemed out of reach a couple days ago, Jelik has tied on points with Neil Pryde's Welbourn 52 Hi Fi and taken the overall IRC 0 lead on countback from Hi Fi. With a second place and winning the passage race, the Ahern/ Bailey/ Wilmer trio's TP52 Oi! have closed in to be one point behind the leaders. This result makes it all to play for on the final day showdown tomorrow.

In exquisite top form, Bill Bremner's Mills King 40 Foxy Lady 6 claimed the short race making it seven wins in a row. Second place on the passage race and they have sealed the IRC 1 title with one day to spare. It's amazing how some tweaking on the rigging, has turned Foxy Lady 6 into an upwind rocket ship. One more win tomorrow will hand them the 2013-14 AYGP Skipper and Yacht of the Year awards. By winning the passage race Anthony Root's Archambault 35 Red Kite II has stemmed Foxy Lady 6 climb to glory, but will need to win both races tomorrow and significantly improve their overall placing to hold onto the lead in the AYGP title race. Meanwhile Marcel Liedts Sydney GTS 43 Elektra holds onto second overall, while Roland Dane's Corby 36 Jessandra II moves into third, pushing Sarab Singh's Sydney 40 Windsikher down to fourth overall.

Gary Baguley's Holman & Pye 52 Custom El Coyote and Patinyakorn 'Ging' Buranrom's S&S 42 Sansiri traded first and second places in the two races today, but a string of wins for Baguley's El Coyote keeps them on top in the IRC 2 Class. A run of third places for Mick Grover's locally owned Elliot 7 Moon Shadow puts them in third overall.

Goto AY Photo GalleryDifferent story in the Bareboat/Cruising Class where the NHC Performance Handicap System is used on the same boats in IRC 2 and handicaps are changed each day based on the corrected times from the previous race. Patinyakorn 'Ging' Buranrom's S&S 42 Sansiri holds a handy four point lead over the smallest boat in the fleet, Mick Grover's Elliot 7 Moon Shadow. Baguley's El Coyote has to settle on third overall under this system.

Goto AY Photo GalleryDuring the lay day the best action photos taken over the last 3 days were edited and a slide show posted in the AY Photo Gallery. This will be upgraded as the regatta progresses.

Racing concludes tomorrow but not before the final showdown plays out on the high seas. Never before has the IRC 0 Class and the AYGP come down to the last race on the last day of the season. Everyone is looking forward to it and especially the combined gala prize presentation party, on the magnificent lawn setting in front of Centara Grand Beach Resort on Chaweng Beach tomorrow night.
