Now
for something completely different
03:02:2010
This
regatta appeals to the serious, the not-so-serious and the not-at-all-serious
'racing' sailors, combines spectacular scenery and
lively parties with some sail boat
racing thrown in. If
your tired of gear breaking racing then the
Phang Nga Bay Regatta will be more to your liking. The region’s
yachting community will visit three of Thailand's most scenic provinces
Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi. As this regatta has a reputation for being
the 'FUN Regatta' over 40 yachts in six classes have entered with many
crews coming from around the world. If
four days of racing and five days of partying is not a big enough incentive
then being the most scenic regatta on the Asian racing calendar should
prove attractive.
The Regatta is organised by the PNBR 2010 Organising Committee under the
auspices of the Ao Chalong Yacht Club and the courses which the fleet
sail every day are set by local Phuket sailing personalities Andy Dowden
and Simon James. The classes are Racing, Cruising A & B, Firefly 850
Sports, Multihull Racing & Cruising.
The route takes the
fleet through the scenic provinces of Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi and
includes some secluded yet favoured anchorages and party venues, all of
which are familiar locations. Registration is at Absolute Chandara Resort
and Spa, Ao Po who are sponsoring and hosting the opening of the Regatta
this evening.
Tomorrow
morning, the first day’s race sponsored by QBE Insurance sees the
fleet head over to Chong Lat with the prize giving held at Laem Sak Seafood,
a short long-tail ride away. Race Day 2 has the fleet heading down to
Ko Yao Noi with boats anchoring off The Paradise Koh Yao, the Race Day
sponsor and host. On Race Day 3, the course will take the boats through
some secluded and pristine islands ending up off the beach at the Sheraton
Krabi for the function hosted and sponsored by them. The final day, Race
Day 4, sponsored by Silolona and Diva Andaman, has the fleet heading back
to Ao Chalong in what should be a magnificent and fast downhill run under
spinnaker to end up with the final prize giving presentation and party
at Kan Eang 2. Overall prizes for the Regatta will be presented by The
Regatta committee and the Ao Chalong Yacht Club.
Thai
government sponsorship is bestowed through the Tourist Authority of Thailand
and the Sports Association of Thailand.
