Even though he didn’t break the race record, Frank Pong is happy that "Jelik" has finally claimed not only line honours, but the Hainan race title on corrected time. Finishing a massive 8 hours ahead of Sam Chan’s Ffree Fire, and over two hours on corrected time ahead of Fred Kinmonth’s "Stella", Jelik appeared to sneak over the line ahead of the drop in wind speed which dogged the other competitors from early this morning. In the absence of Siren, Stella claimed second place on corrected time with Marcel Leid’s "Elektra" in third. Full details of Siren's rig failure have now emerged. The Sayer 13 broke a stay at 2130hrs last night, resulting in the rig dropping overboard. The crew had no option but to cut the rig loose and, although they suffered more complications when it caught on the keel, they managed to free themselves and motor to Sanya. All of the crew are unharmed, although bitterly disappointed at having to abandon the race when 22nm ahead of arch-rival Stella. HKPN competitors Dolphin VI and Baringo are still out on the water, but expected to finish by midnight tonight, allowing Race Officer Y.K. Szeto to enjoy a well earned beer! Return to AsianYachting

18th October 2002 The wind speed fell further overnight, veering to 10 knots Southerly in the early hours before dropping to 5 knots Easterly. Jelik crossed the line in the small hours to record a time of 38:28:32hrs, well outside the record, but considerably faster (even on corrected time) than Ffree Fire which crossed the line in 46:26:30 However, Jelik will have to wait for Elektra, Polar Star and Stella to finish before any celebrations as all three still have a chance to take the title on corrected time. Siren unfortunately had to retire due to rig problems, but all on board are safe and she is expected to arrive in Sanya under engine early afternoon. Finish Times :

17th October 2002 With winds dropping to a calm 12 knots SE, Frank Pong was again denied the opportunity to break Sam Chan's line honours record and is now expected to reach the line at around 2200hrs tonight. The fleet has spread out considerably, with Baringo now 114nm behind the leading boat. Siren and Stella are still on course for a close battle on corrected time, with Stella looking the more likely boat to take the Hainan title.

17th October 2002 At 0600hrs this morning, Jelik was on course to finish the 2002 Hainan race in 29 hours, weather conditions permitting, which would topple Free Fire’s 2 year old record of 29:55:03hrs. Free Fire is on course for a finish time of 30+ hours, while the last boat to finish is expected in Sanya at around 1600hrs on Friday. The weather is reported to be fine, with boats enjoying 18 knot Easterly winds and 1.5m swell.

The favourable conditions that characterised the China Coast Regatta held for today’s start of the 355nm Hainan Race, with 15-18knot ENE winds, sunny skies and fair visibility. Race Officer Jimmy Farquar set the start line for a downwind start to allow boats a running start with no windward mark. Free Fire experienced a last minute hitch when she lost one of her mainsail battens, but managed to solve the problem and cross the start line within a minute of the gun. All boats started clear, although suprisingly, none took advantage of the opportunity to start with their spinnakers up. Once kites were raised Jelik quickly set the pace, building up a commanding lead by the time she passed between the Leeward Islands and Wei Ling Ding. By the 1800hrs radio schedule, Jelik had pulled 4 nm in front of Free Fire, with Baringo bringing up the rear of the fleet and competitors were enjoying 20 knots of breeze.
