Hainan Race - Finish

26-October-01

Jelik, skippered by Frank Pong, finally realised his ambition of claiming line honours in the Hainan off shore race. Jelik’s time of 30:30:23 was just over 35 minutes outside the race record set by Ffree Fire (Sam Chan) last year, but had the consolation of finishing over 30 minutes ahead of their closest rival in this year’s race.

At 08:00hrs on Thursday, after a near perfect start, Jelik seemed to have taken advantage of the winds to draw into an unassailable lead of around 4 hours.

Thundery squalls slowed the competitors down as they reached the Hainan area, allowing the rear markers to catch up with the fleet and Free Fire to cut into Jelik’s lead.

Stella, skippered by Fred Kinmoth, enjoyed a great race to come in sixth over the line, nearly 7 hours behind Jelik, but taking Race honours on corrected time. Crew members later described the exhileration of racing at an average 18 – 22kn on the smaller vessel, proving that in offshore racing, size is not everything.

Frank Pong was gracious in the face of Stella’s overall win, saying "I congratulate Stella for the win and Ffree Fire for such a close finish. We will definitely do better next time!"

Last boat to finish was Allen Fan’s O’Feeling which completed the 350nm course at 13:03:00hrs on Friday, over 45 hours after the start.

Hainan Race - Start

24-October-01

All competitors recorded a clean start to the 2001 Hainan Race and, in spite of some fierce jockeying for position seconds before the gun, no protests were signaled. First over the line was overall winner of the China Coast Regatta, Neil Pryde on Hi Fidelity followed closely by David Kong on Hocux Pocux 2, then Fred Kinmoth on Stella.

As the boats rounded the windward mark in 16kn easterlies, Hocux Pocux 2 eased to the head of the race however, once the spinnakers were hoisted, Jelik (Frank Pong) pulled quickly up the field into first place and drew away to a commanding lead. Bringing up the rear was O’Feeling, who was last across the start line, Rhythm Stick and, surprisingly, Ffree Fire (Sam Chan) in sixth place.

Racing continues for the next 24-36 hours with all eyes on Jelik and her attempt to break Free Fire’s race record of 29:55:03 set last year.

Day 3
21-Oct-01

Enjoying the 16-22Kn winds and clear conditions which characterized the three days of the 2001 China Coast Regatta, the final day’s racing took the IRC classes into heavier seas around Beaufort in an 18NM Islands race. Jelik (Frank Pong) took line honours yet again, although a fierce challenge was mounted by David Kong in Hocux Pocux 2 who crossed the line two minutes later, winning the race on corrected time.

Neil Pryde’s Hi Fidelity won the final race on corrected time, only three seconds clear of Stella (Fred Kinmoth) but enough to secure an overall series win for the New Zealander. All boats now have a two day break, with the 350NM Hainan race starting at 16:00hrs on Wednesday 24 October.

Day 2

20-October-01

Enjoying 14-20Kn winds and glorious sunshine, all boats had a clean start to Day 2 of the China Coast Regatta. IRC boats sailed two 10NM windward / leeward races, with Jelik (Frank Pong) taking line honours in both races. On corrected time, however, Stella (Fred Kinmoth) claimed first place ahead of Hi Fidelity, (Neil Pryde) making up for the previous day’s failure to record a result and throwing the IRC competition wide open for the final day’s racing.

Of the 22 boats starting, Kam Loong (Jack Mallee) and Jigonda (Stuart Anderson) retired with rudder problems. Ffree Fire (Sam Chan) and Rhythm Stick (Robert Knight) both shredded sails, but continued to record a result.

HKPN Class sailed an Island course, with Bewitched taking line honours and first place. Final results for HKPN will depend on the Sunday’s Geometric race and Islands race, with Bewitched, Windseeker and Kali Mbwa starting the final day of China Coast Regatta on equal points.

Race 1
19-Oct-01

China Coast Regatta got underway this morning in near perfect conditions, with 18-20Kn easterly winds contributing to fast and exciting cruiser racing.

In an eventful race start for the IRC Division A, three boats broached the line before the starting signal and were ruled OCS by Race Officer, Jimmy Farquar. Only Neil Pryde on Hi Fidelity observed the recall, leaving Karl Kwok (Tickled Pink) and Fred Kinmoth (Stella) to finish the race without recording a time.

IRC Line honours were taken by Frank Pong on Jelik in 02:43:29, ahead of Sam Chan’s Ffree Fire (02:57:09) and David Kong’s Hocux Pocux 2 (03:01:27). In the HKPN 22NM island race, Windseeker (John Blay) finished first in a corrected time of 03:38:11.

12 October 2001

From 19 to 27 October, Hong Kong’s IRC and HKPN fleets will be taking part in the SAR’s premier offshore sailing event, hosted exclusively for Cruisers.

China Coast Race Week, incorporating the China Coast Regatta and the Hainan Series, is organised by the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club in conjunction with the Chinese Yachting Association.

China Coast Regatta gets underway at 11:00hrs on Friday 19 October at Middle Island, South Side. The three day, five race series for IRC Division comprises two Islands races and three Windward / Leeward races, while the HKPN fleet enjoys three Islands races and one Geometric Course race.

On Wednesday 24 October, competitors will gather east of Lamma Island to commence a gruelling 355 mile downhill dash to Hainan Island in Southern China. Once the boats have reached the shelter of Sanya Bay, the race series will conclude with inshore Geometric Courses.
