Jelik, skippered by Frank Pong, finally realised his ambition of claiming line honours in the Hainan off shore race. Jelik’s time of 30:30:23 was just over 35 minutes outside the race record set by Ffree Fire (Sam Chan) last year, but had the consolation of finishing over 30 minutes ahead of their closest rival in this year’s race.
At 08:00hrs on Thursday, after a near perfect start, Jelik seemed
to have taken advantage of the winds to draw into an unassailable lead
of around 4 hours. Stella, skippered by Fred Kinmoth, enjoyed a great race to come in sixth over the line, nearly 7 hours behind Jelik, but taking Race honours on corrected time. Crew members later described the exhileration of racing at an average 18 – 22kn on the smaller vessel, proving that in offshore racing, size is not everything. Frank Pong was gracious in the face of Stella’s overall win, saying "I congratulate Stella for the win and Ffree Fire for such a close finish. We will definitely do better next time!" Last boat to finish was Allen Fan’s O’Feeling which completed the 350nm course at 13:03:00hrs on Friday, over 45 hours after the start.

| Hainan Race - Start 24-October-01
As the boats rounded the windward mark in 16kn easterlies, Hocux Pocux 2 eased to the head of the race however, once the spinnakers were hoisted, Jelik (Frank Pong) pulled quickly up the field into first place and drew away to a commanding lead. Bringing up the rear was O’Feeling, who was last across the start line, Rhythm Stick and, surprisingly, Ffree Fire (Sam Chan) in sixth place. Racing continues for the next 24-36 hours with
all eyes on Jelik and her attempt to break Free Fire’s race
record of 29:55:03 set last year. Return to AsianYachting Homepage |
Day 321-Oct-01 Enjoying the 16-22Kn winds and clear conditions which characterized the three days of the 2001 China Coast Regatta, the final day’s racing took the IRC classes into heavier seas around Beaufort in an 18NM Islands race. Jelik (Frank Pong) took line honours yet again, although a fierce challenge was mounted by David Kong in Hocux Pocux 2 who crossed the line two minutes later, winning the race on corrected time. Neil Pryde’s Hi Fidelity won the final race on corrected time, only three seconds clear of Stella (Fred Kinmoth) but enough to secure an overall series win for the New Zealander. All boats now have a two day break, with the 350NM Hainan race starting at 16:00hrs on Wednesday 24 October. Overall IRC results for the China Cost Regatta

Day 2 20-October-01
Of the 22 boats starting, Kam Loong (Jack Mallee) and Jigonda (Stuart Anderson) retired with rudder problems. Ffree Fire (Sam Chan) and Rhythm Stick (Robert Knight) both shredded sails, but continued to record a result. HKPN Class sailed an Island course, with Bewitched taking line honours and first place. Final results for HKPN will depend on the Sunday’s Geometric race and Islands race, with Bewitched, Windseeker and Kali Mbwa starting the final day of China Coast Regatta on equal points. On corrected time, the results were as follow:
