It all comes down to boat speed...
While the big boats fight it out at the front of the fleet, it has a detrimental effect when the IRC Ratings are applied. Despite the start recall, Root's Black Baza recovered quickly and managed to come out on top, when the provisional results were announced. Fred Kinmonth/Nick Burns Sydney GTS 43 EFG Mandrake slotted into second place and the drop in pressure helped Martin Tanco's symmetrical spinnaker carrying Sydney 46 Centennial II, into third place and displaced the big boats down the order.
A protest was lodged by Mandrake against Black Baza, for a windward mark infringement, that was filmed by a crew member and resulted in Black Baza being disqualified. As Mandrake and Centennial II corrected out with exactly the same time, they both share first place points and Standard Insurance Centennial III moves into third.
During the second race, the NE'ly started to fade and the gusts swung in direction, which either aided or hindered the boats, depending on their position around the course. Echauz's Standard Insurance Centennial III, got the better of Hill's Antipodes in the line honours race, but Root's Black Baza blitzed the course and claimed the win by almost four minutes from EFG Mandrake. The increase in boat speed on Standard Insurance Centennial III slots them into third place and keeps them in the running.
The Cruising Class continued to circulate and despite the differences in size and design, they all reported, they're having a good time. Jun Avecilla Beneteau First 36.7 Selma Star claimed the daily double again, while Viggo Lisson and the spinnaker less Beneteau First 31.7 Selma had to settle on second place. The wide windward angle and slow tacking on Garry Kingshott's Fusion 40 catamaran Kerida, hampers their progress and leaves them well back in third place.
Racing continues tomorrow with one point to point race for both classes. The decreasing wind forecast means, the teams will have to change gears to light wind performance and we can expect some more twist and turns before the end of the regatta.
