2014/15 AY Grand Prix Event

Victory for Centennial III, Selma Star & Alexa

11th April 2015 Subic Bay, Philippines: The gusty Easterly has been blowing all week and although a little lighter today, it did not disappoint and successfully rounded off the regatta. Two windward/leeward races for the IRC classes and another passage race for the Cruising Class, was their last chance to improve their standings and decide which step on the podium to stand on. Once again the spirited pre-start maneuvering provided the entertainment on the start boat and ultimately the race result and overall placings.

Similar to the Formula 1 restart, Ernesto Echauz's TP 52 Standard Insurance Centennial III held the pack above the lay line and with a few seconds to go, turned the bow down and hit the start line with speed, leaving the rest of the fleet, including arch rival Frank Pong's Custom Dibley 75 Jelik in their wake. As it took Pong's Jelik half the leg to catch up, they could not recover the time needed to win the race and handed Echauz's Centennial III their fourth win of the regatta. During the final race, Pong's Jelik had a couple of uncharacteristic late spinnaker drops, causing wide mark rounding's and some equipment failure, forced them to retire from the race. This left the door open for Echauz's Centennial III to claim the daily double and win the IRC 1 class with five wins and make up for second place at the Boracay Cup with Jelik. Third and second places for Martin Tanco's Sydney 46 Centennial II, kept the dueling leaders honest and ended up in third overall.

Jun Avecilla's Beneteau First 36.7 Selma Star stayed on the pace and out performed Ricky Sandoval's First 31.7 Selma to clinch the first race. After crossing the finish line on the second race, Jun Avecilla notified the race committee that they were retiring from the race. During the starting sequence, the crew noticed the engine was in forward gear and despite immediately correcting it and completing the race, very honourable to withdraw as a consequence. Selma Star still won the IRC 2 class and despite claiming two wins Sandoval's Selma had to settle on second place.

Several lead changes between Harry Taylor's S & S 36 Irresistible and Eric Jurado's U20 Alexa during the race, made for an exciting finish. On the final lead into the Marina finish line, some dramatic wind shifts and a departing container ship complicated things, which allowed Jurado's Alexa to capitalize and secure their fourth win in a row and the Cruising Class title for the first time. By taking second place Taylor's Irresistible missed the chance of winning the title for the third time. Ome Carbonell's Bugo - Bugo was a late entry and finishing in third place is a great result and very character building for the crew.

After a slow start two brothers Daven and Dazer Balangue managed to climb to the top of the Optimist Class by the end of the regatta. After a few mid fleet finishes the early leader Morris Lann Madlos ended up in third place. This result makes it difficult for the Philippine Sailing Association to select the representative for the SEA Games in Singapore in June.

In the Streaker Class Roel Batlagan strung together 10 wins and despite a couple of retirements in the 14 race series, struck gold by the end of the regatta. Never finishing worse than second place Harry Kim Lumapas settled on second overall. Froilan Boyano traded third and fourth places with Zoren Boyano to end up third and fourth respectively.

Due to equipment breakages the Flying Fifteen Class were reduced to six races. Edgar Vilapana / Jeanson Lumapas managed to top the class before complete fatigue set in. Jerene Medel / Amiel Agustin were tied for first place at the beginning of the regatta but equipment breakage from there on in reduced them to second overall. Janno Dalanon / Zoren Boyano were first to exit the competition and third place for out of three boats is the consolation prize.

Summary
Unfortunately Super Typhoon Maysak played a big part in depriving several Hong Kong yachts from competing and severely compromised the regatta. But as they say in the Classics "The show must go on". The local boats came to the rescue and had a wonderful outing. Strong wind, clear sky and flat water makes for great sailing at any regatta. The organising committee must be commended for persisting in light of these circumstances and running an exceptional show both on and off the water, to their usual high standards.
