17th President's Cup 2009
AY
Race Report 4 & Summary
2009
Champions are crowned...
Sailors awoke to heavy rainfall which looked like it was going to ruin
the final day of racing. Despite all this PRO Jerry Rollin was adamant
that racing would go on and the race committee disappeared into the gray
mist to set the course. Just as well because around 10:30 amazingly the
sun came out, dried up all the rain and the wind instantly reappeared
as if it had never left. Only 25 minutes delay from the scheduled starting
time and already the wind was peaking at 22 knots. Not without its problems
as six yachts retired with broken gear caused by bad handling or fatigue.
All eyes
were on the battle between Ray
Ordoveza's Excel 53 Karakoa
and Neil Pryde's Welbourne 52 Hi Fi for first overall in the
Racing Class. Both enjoy a good blow and the crew work has been exceptional
to date. A bit of covering before the start then they were off. Ernesto
Echauz's Sydney 46 Centennial helmed by Aussie Jamie Wilmot entered
the fray and more than ever determined to defend the title.
After three laps the boats had established there handicap spacing's and
it was hard to determine a winner so the race committee were asked for
results before the final race got underway. These were not forthcoming
until the boats were half way around the final race. Neil Pryde stayed
away from the pin end fracas and crossed the start line on port tack in
clear air with pace to go on and score two wins on the final day to be
crowned the 2009 overall winner. Frank
Pong's R/P 75 Jelik always excels in these conditions and scored
two second places and provided the points separation needed for Hi
Fi to go on and win the cup. Ray
Ordoveza's Excel 53 Karakoa
have
been the surprise package all week and despite the brave performance ended
with two third places to secure second place overall from a fast advancing
Jelik in third place. Racing has gone down to the wire as only
five minutes of corrected time separated first place to seventh and last
place in the final races.
In
the Racer/Cruiser
class
George Hackett's J-35
Team Windshear Rudy Project
added
two more wins to their tally, making it five wins out of six races to
easily defend the title they won last year. Paul
Bankowski's Kerr 11.3 Jaywalker gave
them a run for there money but a premature start and trawling the spinnaker
saw an end to their title hopes and had to settle on second overall. Martin
Tranco's X 452 Challenge was
always knocking on the door and despite a disqualification holding them
down they pressed on to eventually climb back into third overall. Allen
Burrell's Farr 1104 Rags slipped
a little in Race 5 to open the door for Challenge and ended up
in fourth place.
Two
wins and two second places for Jelle Mann's Oceanic 44 Saipin
sees
them sail away with the PY class title. Second
place for David Mc Kenna's Sun Odyssey 42 Raparee XXX has them
in second overall and handing over the title to Saipin. Third
place for David Wheeler's Cape Carib 33 Freewheeler from the
UK has them holding third overall in the three boat class.
Summary
Strong wind, close racing and hard partying - What more would you want?
Well Boracay has laid it all on, for one of the classiest IRC fleets to
gather anywhere in the world. No wonder why more International boats are
making there way to Boracay when the President's Cup is on. The strong
wind is a good test on crews and boats alike. The secret is out - a very
stylish setting and friendly Philippine hospitality will no doubt have
yachties coming back for more.
