November 2nd: The day started with a champagne and strawberry breakfast, which always brings a different approach to yacht racing. The all awaited spilt between ambassadors and yacht skippers took place, in the early morning draw and everyone set off with great expectations. Twenty five ambassadors in Class 1 for the Ambassadors Cup and the remaining diplomatic staff, in Class 2. This unique event has turned into the biggest informal social event in Singapore's diplomatic circles and is embarking on its 20th edition. H.E. James Sinclair, Ambassador of Chile and current President of the Ambassadors’ Cup, is yet again at the helm, and present to steer the latest edition to a resounding success. After two days of heavy afternoon downpours, the prayers went out for changes and resulted in clear sky, sunshine and enough wind to get the fleet underway on Course 4, down the Johor Strait, out to the North Angler Mark and back. As the fleet rounded the approaches to the airport the breeze turned to the South East and strengthened, to produce a long beat to windward. The more efficient yachts on a beat took control, while the displacement yachts had their work cut out for them.

Steve Manning/Paul O'Malley's Red Rum with H.E. Patrick Bourne, the Ambassador for Ireland made a clear break from the start and never looked back, to claim Line Honours, at the shortened finish line. Justin Lean's Mum 30 Invictus with H.E. Agustin Garcia-Lopez Loaeza Ambassador for Mexico slotted in 2nd place, in front of Thomas Reckefuss X 99 Born in Fire with H.E. Jun Yamazaki the Japanese Ambassador onboard.

The results were reversed, when the PY handicaps were applied, Born in Fire with the Japanese Ambassador H.E. Jun Yamazaki came out on top, with H.E. Agustin Garcia-Lopez Loaeza Ambassador for Mexico on Invictus in 2nd place and Red Rum with H.E. Patrick Bourne, the Ambassador for Ireland in 3rd overall.

Edwin Low on SkyBird dominated the Non - Ambassadors class with a first and fastest, from Mark Chia's Rachel 1 with the Timor Leste representatives in 2nd place and Leslie Fung's Todak 2 with Qatar stafff onboard, managed to slip into 3rd place.

A good turn out in the Trimaran Class, with nine on the start line. Scott McCook helming Michael Chia's brand new Corsair 970 Sports Buay Kao La, in his absence came through with first and fastest. Tim Hill with the family onboard Cicak came in 2nd place, with Shaun Norris Witblits in 3rd overall.

The only competitor in the Off the Beach catamaran class, Jeremy Perrier Very Bad Influence with his two boys onboard, clocked up a good time to be first and last in the class. Despite Stefan Vidan's Firefly with the disabled sailors on board, taking line honours in the Cruising Multihull Class, Gary Matthews Katrianne came through to take the handicap honours.

When was the last time you danced the night away at the end a regatta? The final speech by H.E. James Sinclair, Ambassador of Chile and current President of the Ambassadors’ Cup, summed it up. How easy it is to have fun in a unsettled world and bring people together with similar desires, despite their colour, religion or culture. This will resound in our ears for years to come and hopefully something will come from it, despite the urgency of the situation.
