July 26th 2017: As Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek kicked off the 16th edition of the AsianYachting Grand Prix (AYGP), all 40 Skippers and Yachts in seven classes have scored valuable points in the AYGP Rankings. Outstanding victories for Ray Roberts TP52 Team Hollywood and John Newnham's Firefly 850 Twin Sharks scoring 7 race wins each, sends them directly to the top the annual Rankings and take the early lead for the AYGP Skipper and Yacht of the Year titles.

Goto 2017-18 AsianYachting Grand PrixAlan Carwadine's Stealth 11.8 Asia Catamarans Hurricane and Niels Degenkolw's X3/4 Ton MK2 Phoenix are tied on 16 points for 3rd place. Neil Ayre's Pulse 600 Java Racing round out the top five in the rankings. The single nominated skipper has worked out well and opens the way for them to race on different yachts throughout the season.

This allows some yachts to reposition themselves and several notable International teams prepare for the onslaught of high-octane racing action in Asian waters.

Over the years the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club blue water classics has attracted some big names and this season is no different. Josh Alexander is bringing the ORMA 60 Team Australia and revived multihull participation by igniting Raphael Blot's Banuls 60 MACH 2 into action. The Italians are coming on Matteo Savelli's Cookson 50 Mascalzone Latino to take on China's Wang Bin's Cookson 50 UBOX, that was 3rd overall on the Sydney Hobart Race last year. Monohull line honours battle between Seng Huang Lee's 100FT super maxi Scallywag and Phillip Turner's Reichel/Pugh 66 Alive is expected to go down to the wire.

Goto Phuket Raceweek Photo Gallery The AYGP is a unique point scoring system, that annually ranks all the big boat Skippers and Yachts that race in Eastern and South East Asian waters. To be fully representative of the regions sailing nations, regattas in Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Vietnam and China are point scoring events, with the China Cup being added to the regatta lineup this season.

Ultimately the AYGP Skipper and Yacht of the Year will don the Trend Fashions navy blue blazer, presented with the Perpetual AYGP Cup filled with champagne and the hand crafted take home trophy at the gala Samui Regatta prize presentation party in May next year, is the highlight of the AYGP season.
