27th February 2013:
The
conclusion of the combined Subic
Boracay Race & Cup, not only marks 70% completion of
the 2012-13
Season, but is also when the long term campaigners come into
their own. The AYGP
Skipper
and Yacht of the Year awards, are usually the domain of the
Racing Class but at this stage,
Peter Wilcox's Schionning Gforce 1500 Mojo, with 3 mid-season
Multihull Class victories, still
holds a slender 3 point lead in the AYGP
Championship.
After
contesting four events, Frank Pong's Reichel/Pugh 75 Jelik is
the big mover and shaker taking over second place in the rankings. Although
last seasons champion, Neil Pryde's Welbourn 52 Hi Fi has only
contested two regattas, their exemplary performance brings them into 12th
place, with four regattas left to run. The Skipper and Yacht which has
the best score from six events during the season will be crowned the champion.
From now on, the winner will depend entirely on which regattas are contested
and could come from any of the top 25 in the rankings.
Last
Month we raised a change to the scoring system for classes
with only one boat competing. After some debate, it was decided that they
will only receive 5 points for entering and no points for individual race
wins and overall placing points, as its a forgone conclusion with only
one boat. A further change will also be implemented based on a sliding
scale for classes with only 2 to 4 entries.
This will ultimately affect Simon Morris' Staysail Schooner Sirius
1935
presently in third place and the IRC Racing Div 2, Premier Cruising and
HKPN class winners on the Hong
Kong to Hainan Race.

Cup.
March/April
brings the Hong
Kong to San Fernando Race (Starts March 27th) and is quickly
followed by the Commodore's
Cup (April 2nd - 6th) in
Subic Bay to round out the East Asian circuit.
For
the last two events, Top
of the Gulf Regatta (May 3rd - 7th) and Samui
Regatta (May 24th - June 1st) the yachts will have to make
their way up into the Gulf of Thailand and battle it out with South East
Asian yachts aiming to complete the season on top of the podium.
All
these events are posted on the AY
Calendar
and have boats for charter, crew positions wanted or available posted
on their website's. No excuse then, for not getting your tropical sailing
fix over the next few months.
At
the end of each five star regatta, points are awarded to all the competing
skippers and yachts, then accumulatively displayed on the AYGP
Microsite.
This
pointscore can also be regarded as an annual Big Boat Ranking System for
the East and South East Asian region with the eventual winner being crowned
