Goto June AYGP NewsJune 07th 2018: Another outstanding AsianYachting Grand Prix (AYGP) season came to a thrilling conclusion. For the first time in the 16 AYGP year history, 335 Skippers and 320 Yachts have scored points, in at least one of the 13 point scoring events, that make up the family of AYGP five star regattas/races each season. We were honoured to crown Fred Kinmonth and Nick Burns, plus their mostly corinthian crew, on Mandrake III, with the 2017-18 AYGP Skipper and Yacht of the Year titles and go down i n history, in the all inclusive class era, for winning six point scoring regattas in one season. June 2nd, Koh Samui, Thailand: Despite being the final day of racing and most the class winners decided, everyone was back out on the water and very determined to make the most of the last races for the 2017-18 Season. Another short wait while the Easterly increased in strength and PRO Ross Chisholm and the race team, set up for two windward/leeward races, for all four classes. Talk about keen to get going, there were individual recalls on the first IRC 0 start, followed by a general recall in Race 2 and more individual recalls on the restart. In this highly charged atmosphere, there is no coming back after being recalled and the fight for the podium places, received some last minute adjustments. Although Fred Kinmonth/Nick Burns GTS 43 Mandrake III have already won the 2017-18 AYGP Skipper and Yacht of the Year titles, they were gunning for the IRC 1 title and held a slim 2 point lead coming into today's final and expecting to have a double celebration at the prize presentation. Samui Regatta - Classic conditions return for final days...

Goto AY Race Report 4 June 1st, Koh Samui, Thailand: Although the South Westerly monsoon has been prevalent on the West Coast of the Malay Peninsula, over here on the East Coast, we have had to rely on local breezes to propel the yachts along. That is until today, when the Westerly piped in and racing could resume with pace, in the passage between Ko Samui and Phangan. PRO Ross Chisholm selected the 22nm Course 1 and 32nm Course 2, that sent the fleet over to Had Rin, along the South Phangan coast and IRC 0 up around Ko Tae Nok, before converging on the gate, in the center of the passage and returning to the start/finish line. Everyone welcomed the increase in breeze and were ready to get on with it, after the restful lay-day yesterday. May 30th, Koh Samui, Thailand: After an hours delay waiting for the breeze to build to 5 knots and settle in direction, PRO Ross Chisholm sent the fleet on their way, with a whim and a prayer on short windward/leeward courses. As the breeze faded, some dead patches appeared and the yachts struggled to make way, into the adverse current. The yachts that went to the right seemed to be favoured and even the blistering fast TP52's were reduced to a crawl and several missed tacks to lay the top mark. Goto AY Race Report 2May 29th, Koh Samui, Thailand: Waking up to the sound of pitter patter on the windows and rumbling thunder from the hills this morning, I knew we were in for another interesting day. Completely opposite from the sweltering heat and light wind yesterday, the heavy overcast sky with scattered showers, produced 12 to 15 knots from the South and a bumpy seaway. This would suit the older heavier yachts, that like a bit of wind to sail up to their optimum speed. After a short delay for the rain to clear, PRO Ross Chisholm advised the fleet, there would be a windward/leeward race for the IRC 0 and 1 classes, then they would join the other classes on a 22nm island passage race to the South in the afternoon. These are hard core racers, on some very expensive hardware, that relish the opportunity to crank the boat up and send her briskly on the way. May 28th, Koh Samui, Thailand: Despite all the weather forecasts looking grim, after a short delay an unprecedented Easterly sprung up and PRO Ross Chisholm's race team were quick to react and sent the fleet on short windward/leeward courses, just to seaward of Chewang Beach. Three races for the IRC Zero and One classes and two for the Cruising and Multihull classes, is a perfect way to start the regatta and have some races in hand, in case there is some delays further down the road. Reminiscent of early Phuket King's Cup days, when the lure of some fun, on and off the water, on a tropical Thai island, is hard to resist and continues to attract top level International teams, that have transformed Samui Island into a world-class sailing and sports tourism destination. May 08th 2018: For 15 years, the AsianYachting Grand Prix (AYGP) Skipper and Yacht of the Year titles, were awarded to Skipper(s)/Boat Owner(s), but at the start of this 16th AYGP Season, we came under fire, for presenting the 2015-16 & 2016-17 Skipper titles, jointly to Anthony Root and Steve Manning’s Black Baza. They fundamentally had two teams that competed separately at selected events. This season we tried awarding the points to the person in charge of the yacht at each event and soon discovered this single decision, became very divisive and unfair to multiple skipper/owner teams, that genuinely compete with the same crew and share the planning, crew roles and responsibilities between themselves when onboard. Goto AY Race Report 4 & Summary01st May 2018: Becalmed between two storm cells for 90 minutes, before the breeze filtered in from the East, was the first order off the day. A windward/leeward course for all classes was quickly laid and the final days racing got underway. As the breeze increased and veered to the South, a 10nm passage race out to Ko Klet Kaeo and back for the IRC and Multihull classes, while the Platu's completed another W/L race and having completed their four race program, the Cruising Class went home. Similar story for the Optimist and dinghy classes, two races to complete their program and everyone back in time for the gala dinner and final presentation dinner. 30th April 2018: For the first time this regatta the sun came out and spread some warmth over the racing area, but as the afternoon arrived, the threatening dark clouds building to the South West, descended over the course and put an end to play. Two windward/leeward races were completed for the keelboat and multihull classes, before PRO Simon James sent them home. It was a similar situation for the Optimist and dinghy classes racing on the inshore courses. Goto AY Race Report 229th April 2018: The full scope of conditions, from dead calm for a few hours, to squally rain storms, 90 degree wind shift blowing off the first race, and eventually settling down to a fading Southerly. Kept the race committee busy relaying courses and a long day on the water for the sailors. PRO Simon James sent the IRC Classes on a long passage race and managed to complete two races for the One-Design Platu 25 Class, contesting the Coronation Cup. Almost 200 dinghies, Optimists, radio controlled boats, kite boards for the first time and launching the S\V14 for people with disabilities with display sailing, took place in a festival of sail, despite the conditions at Ocean Marina Yacht Club. 28th April 2018: Waking up to the sound of thunder, lightning and rain, is very demoralizing for sailors to approach the days proceedings. As the radar displayed a widespread pattern, the AP flag was hoisted ashore and left sailors looking out to sea and hoping for a break in the weather. PRO Simon James and the race team were on station and just after 1100 the AP was lowered and sailors headed out wearing wet weather gear, into the drizzling rain. April 11th 2018: After the Rolex China Sea Race, Fred Kinmonth and Mandrake III take the lead in the 2017-18 AsianYachting Grand Prix (AYGP) Skipper and Yacht Rankings. Other top podium skippers, Ernesto Echauz, Geoff Hill, Yan Yuye and Duncan Hine made a late charge up the rankings and take over 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th places respectively. At the conclusion of the Commodores Cup the big mover is Emerson Villena and the Philippine Sailing Association, with six race victories at 3 regattas, in the FarEast 28 Class, to climb up into 3rd place. The IRC 1 skippers arrived at the final day full of anticipation, with only a couple of points separating the podium places. Eager to get going, they came in early and crowded the extremely bias boat end, until they overflowed onto the course side of the start line. As the horn sounded Nick Burns/Fred Kinmonth’s GTS 43 Mandrake III and YY Yan/YF Liu's Ker 42 Custom Seawolf were recalled and took a few minutes to clear the pack and return to start again. In most cases this would have sounded the death knell, but when the spinnakers went up at the top mark, Mandrake III had recovered and led the way around the course. As they circulated it was hard to judge if they were far enough in front, to secure the handicap win and the series. Goto

AY Race Report 3Commodores Cup - Subic Bay sailing, one of the best in the world

Ask some of the sailing legends that have raced in Subic Bay and they will all tell you "It's one of the best racing locations in the world". Good breeze, flat water and warm weather, any time of the year. Even when the prevailing trade wind goes soft, the hilly terrain develops its own microclimate and the sea breeze quickly replaces it. Today the brisk North Easterly saw the IRC 1, 2 and Cruising classes, away on 21, 18 & 13nm courses and the FarEast 28 class complete a windward/leeward race before joining the others on a passage race. After a long reaching leg out to the entrance, the sea breeze arrived and produced quick times on the way back. Some yachts initially gained an advantage in the transition period but were reeled back in further down the track. Goto

Commodores Cup - Mark rounding confusion for some...

AY Race Report 205th April 2018, Subic Bay, Philippines:
As the breeze backed by 10 degrees on the first upwind leg, PRO Jerry Rollin instructed the mark layers (as per sailing instructions) to move the windward marks and replace with different colour change marks. It soon became evident that some confusion reigned, as YY Yan's Seawolf raised the spinnaker and had broken free from the pack. They were half way down the downwind leg, before the next spinnaker appeared. Similarly in the IRC 2 class, when Gordon Liu's Kingsman made a big gain on the second upwind leg. Realising their mistake Seawolf retired and questions were asked by radio on Kingsman's status. Doubt existed on Jun Avecilla's Beneteau First 36.7 Selma Star and they returned upwind for a third time and rounded all the marks. Initially a protest was lodged with the International Jury but after some discussions was withdrawn, as the concerned had missed the radio call, to relay the marks. Goto

An Easterly breeze varying from 7 to 12 knots, defied the weather predictions and saw the fleet start on time and race away full of anticipation. The FarEast 28 class completed a windward/leeward race, then joined the other classes on a long passage race, within the confines of Subic Bay. The afternoon change over to the sea breeze was relatively smooth, as the breeze clocked around to the South and had minimal effect on the finishing order. This year a Sail Village is set up at the Lighthouse Marina Resort beachfront, for the public to experience sailing for FREE from April 3rd to 7th and a rare opportunity on board three majestic Balangay boats (replicas of the 800-year-old wooden watercraft) now considered the National Boat of the Philippine's. Goto AY Race Report 51800, 31st March 2018: With half of the fleet finished and the other half of the fleet succumbing to light breeze off Subic Bay, the Rolex China Sea Race leaders have been decided. For long time participant Fred Kinmonth and Nick Burns’ GTS 43 Mandrake III, persistence has paid off taking the Overall Rolex China Sea Race win! “It's been a big build up over a number of years actually. We've got a nice boat, we've got a crew that we've been sailing with for years, and this year we have a very good navigator which we haven't [in the past] and I don't want to be rude to any of our previous navigators, but this guy was something special. 1800, 30th March 2018: The Rolex China Sea Race monohull record holder (47h 31m 08s) Phillip Turner's Reichel/Pugh 66 Alive arrived this afternoon at 15h 08m 24s. In the early hours of the morning, it looked like they had a chance of breaking their record but once again, the Luzon hole took its toll slowing their boat speed down to 2.8kts for a time, giving them an elapsed time of 51h 48m 24s. Skipper Duncan Hine summed up on the racing, “The start was great; it was quite exciting and we were first through Lei Yu Mun Gap in Hong Kong. After that, it was a bit of 'soldier's course' which still requires a lot of concentration. We went through all of our transitions - the crew work was stunning. Goto

Beau Geste smashes RCSR Multihull race record

Goto AY Race Report 330th March 2018: Karl Kwok's MOD Beau Geste crossed the finish line early this morning, 30 March, at 01h 50m 07s in Subic Bay, Philippines - smashing the 18 year old multihull record set by Benoit Lesaffre's Crowther 50 Catamaran, Atmosphere, by an incredible 9h 31m 40s. The new multihull record now stands at an awesome 38h 30m 07s. MOD Beau Geste had an epic run for the first 23 hours of the Race averaging around 20kts. On Thursday morning however, with around 100nm left to the finish, the breeze died and the crew had a painful few hours as they tip-toed towards Subic Bay. "We had seven hours sitting, just drifting, doing 1 to 3kts. We got through it, it was not called for but it happens. It was a bit of a low after we gained everything overnight" said Kwok of the final leg into Subic Bay. Goto

29th March 2018: Having had an epic first 24 hours averaging 20kts followed by a challenging morning in very little breeze, Karl Kwok's MOD Beau Geste is expected in to cross the finish line after midnight tonight and in doing so will break Atmosphere’s 18 year old multihull record of 48h 01m 47s.

They're off! on the 2018 Rolex China Sea Race

Goto AY Race Report 1 28th March 2018: The 2018 edition of the Rolex China Sea Race got underway at 1120hrs today with blue skies and an easterly breeze of 8kts. The start line, located in front of Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club s Kellett Island Clubhouse, was a bit hectic with most boats favouring the committee boat end of the line, resulting in a few bumps between boats and an individual recall being signalled for Rampage 2, Seawolf and Sitka. Hong Kong s iconic skyline provided the perfect backdrop as the fleet headed east towards Lei Yue Mun Gap. First through the gap (the smallest distance between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon) was Alive, the current race record holder of 47h 31m 08s - followed shortly after by Karl Kwok's MOD 70 Beau Geste. After the gap, MOD Beau Geste quickly extended in front of the fleet and is currently travelling along at around 24kts. Goto

27th March 2018: Twenty nine yachts, in six classes will face the starters orders, at 1300hrs on Wednesday 28th, for the 29th running of the 565nm Rolex China Sea Race. Light Easterly breeze in Victoria Harbour to start with, then increasing to the low teens on the exit from Hong Kong and backing to NE, plus further increases as they cross the China Sea, are deemed favourable for the big boats to make a fast crossing. The usual wind shadow in the lee of Luzon and on the final approach to Subic Bay, could make or break a record run and play into the smaller boats favour in the handicap stakes. Goto March AYGP News...March 07th 2018: By winning the inaugural Subic Bay Verde Island Race and five of the six Subic Bay Cup races, Fred Kinmonth takes over second place and is only 10 points adrift from Chris Mitchell in the AYGP Skipper Rankings. Otonomos Mandrake III takes the lead from Lady Bubbly in the AYGP Yacht Rankings, with four point scoring events to go. Regulars on the Western Circuit events have also moved up the Rankings. Geoff Hill's Antipodes slots into third place, while Ernesto Echauz Standard Insurance Centennial is tied for 7th place. All these Skippers and Yachts have a chance to improve at the Rolex China Sea Race blue water classic, starting on March 28th, which is quickly followed by the Commodores' Cup (April 3rd - 7th) in Subic Bay. 02:03:2018 Subic Bay, Philippines: The final day started with the North Easterly trades peaking at 11 knots, then faded during the race to 4 knots and returned towards the end, in time to start another windward/leeward race. Murphy's Law was then enacted and dwindled away again, veered heavily to the East and eventually the advancing sea breeze took over. Depending on the yachts position on the course, this severely hindered or aided the teams and mixed up the race placing's. The top teams in each class seemed to be able to power through and cement their position, while down the order significant changes occurred and some shuffling of the overall order took place. 01:03:2018 Subic Bay, Philippines: Despite the North Easterly trade wind decreasing and turning gusty, the IRC 1, 2 and Cruising classes completed their long passage race and the FarEast 28 class two windward/leeward races. As they are nearing the end of the regatta, things are spicing up, with several protests lodged and hearings taking place. This affects the race and overall placing's going into tomorrows final showdown. Further decreases are forecasted for tomorrow and crew will have to draw on their light weather trim and tactics to succeed. 28:02:2018 Subic Bay, Philippines: The combination of a brisk North Easterly trade wind, this time of the year and the wide expanse of Subic Bay, are the perfect place to hold a regatta. Warm sunshine, clear blue sky, good breeze and flat water are a sailors delight. Two windward/leeward races for the IRC and FarEast 28 classes, plus one long passage race for the Cruising Class, went off without a hitch and back in time for a late lunch. Crews are also getting into the swing of things and a few changes in placing's, has resulted in tightening the gap in the overall stakes and all to play for. Goto AY SBC Race Report 1 27:02:2018 Subic Bay, Philippines: The forecasted strong North Easterly lived up to its reputation and provided powerful racing for the entire fleet, to be back in the marina by 1400. Equipment breakages during the Subic Bay Verde Island Race have hurriedly been repaired and although the IRC classes are down on numbers, six competitive one-design FarEast 28 racers made up for it. One 21nm passage race for the IRC classes and a two lap windward/leeward race, followed by a shortened 18nm passage race for the FarEast 28 class, proved to be a good workout on Day 1. SBVIR - Line Honours for Antipodes, Overall IRC to Mandrake III

25:02:2018 Subic Bay, Philippines: All race it was a nip and tuck affair, between Geoff Hill's Smith 72 Antipodes and Ernesto Echauz's TP 52 Standard Insurance Centennial III. After a quick exit from Subic Bay, Antipodes caught up with Centennial III in the wind shadow of the Bataan Mountain Range, then battled it out all the way down to the Verde Passage. Antipodes led around Verde Island and extended on the return leg. Taking an inshore course on the return leg slowed Antipodes and by morning were within Centennial III's sight. Goto AY Race Report 124:02:2018 Subic Bay, Philippines: With the North Easterly blasting in at 20 to 25 knots, the fleet carefully approached the downwind start line as the horn sounded and the inaugural Subic Bay Around Verde Island Race got underway in earnest. As the 'All Clear' came across the radio, from the pin end it looked as if it was a toss up between Geoff Hill's Smith 72 Antipodes and Ernesto Echauz's TP 52 Standard Insurance Centennial III to be first across the line. 23:02:2018 Subic Bay, Philippines: Due to the cancellation of the Subic Boracay Race and Cup, the organisers are keeping in step with the long passage race and inshore regatta format, have come up with the Subic Bay Around Verde Island Passage Race and the Subic Bay Cup Regatta. The SBVIPR is a tough 200-mile race from Subic Bay, down the coast past the entrance to Manila Bay, to the Verde Island Passage between Luzon and Mindoro, rounding Verde Island to Port and back to finish in Subic Bay. It's a very challenging course and has many obstacles along the way, including navigating through the wind shadow of the Bataan and Batangas Mountain Ranges plus strong tidal currents on both the outward and return legs. President Duterte's call to close down Boracay hotels for health reasons, forced the Subic Boracay Race and Cup to be cancelled and keeping in line with the long passage race and inshore regatta format, have come up with the 200nm Subic Bay Around Verde Island Passage Race and the Subic Bay Cup Regatta. Despite last minute air ticket and accommodation cancellations, most the original entries have adapted to the change and good to see International teams launching into the inaugural one design FarEast 28 class. 18:02:2018 Nongsa Point Marina, Indonesia: The North Easterly arrived on cue for the early 0800 start and the fleet enjoyed a 25nm slog back up the Riau Strait and arrived back at Nongsa Point Marina by lunch time. Then the tedious tidying up exercise, personal ablutions, downloading 1000's of email messages and get ready for the gala prize presentation and dinner around the pool. While three of the four class winners were already decided, the podium places were open for the taking and all eyes were on the highly competitive multihull class for the final race showdown. 16:02:2018 Neptune Is, Indonesia: Fully recovered after the lay-day, all the crews were back out on the water and ready to go. PRO Jerry Rollin devised a new course, starting from West to East and basically twice around Neptune Island, in a wide arc, to the extremities of the surrounding islands. Although the North Easterly breeze has been decreasing throughout the week, 8 to 10 knot gusts sent the fleet briskly on their way. Overcoming the incoming current was the next obstacle and as the breeze turned patchy on the return leg in the lee of Neptune Island, the decision to shorten the course was met with resounding applause. Goto AY Race Report 112:02:2018 Fishhead Is, Indonesia: After setting a new record for the Round Bintan course at 10 hours 28 minutes last weekend, Robert van Paridon's 12.81m trimaran Tantrum Too is on a roll and set a new record for the 50nm Leg 1 Batam to Fishhead in 3:23:43, taking 29mins 15secs from the inaugural record set by Alan Hodges Kaze 3 in 2015. The prevailing North Easterly pumping in at 18 to 23 knots provided quick times for everyone and also a few incidents with over powering and sail choices. This is the 4th year that Todd Keeler and the gang have hosted a stopover at Fishhead Is and each year significant improvements have been made and this year the finish line has a swimming pool with reclining lounge chairs and wi fi connection, a far cry from the original building site. The day started looking very promising but faded half way through the first race, then picked up and changed direction for the second race and started to rain at the start of the third race. As the short choppy sea from yesterday has disappeared, the Platu's and J24's came into their own favourable conditions and showed up on the score sheet. Victory for the Scallywags into homeport...
Goto VOR websiteAfter breaking away from the pack in the doldrums, Team Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag held onto the lead for nearly 3000nm to win Leg 4 of the Volvo Ocean Race and lead the fleet into their home port of Hong Kong. It’s an historic win for skipper David Witt and his team who had to overcome significant setbacks on the previous legs as they come to grips with racing the VOR 65. Witt and navigator Libby Greenhalgh had a plan and stuck to it. "Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't and this time it worked for us". Even when the team dropped miles recovering a man overboard after Alex Gough was swept off the boat and the chasing boats began chipping away at the lead, two days out from the finish, they stuck to their guns and did what they thought was right and it worked out. Witt said. “All teams need a bit of confidence and I think one thing that is underrated in sport is momentum and this will certainly give the Scallywags plenty of that and acknowledged the significance of the win as the local team leading the fleet into the first ever Volvo Ocean Race stopover in Hong Kong. Different story in the AYGP Yacht Rankings, Lady Bubbly moves up to 2nd place, but trails Otonomos Mandrake III with an 8 point lead, after contesting 4 events. By winning all 7 races, Niels Degenkolw's X 3/4 ton Mk2 Phoenix becomes the big mover and shaker, from 25th to 10th in the Skipper Rankings, after only two events. Goto AY Race Report 5 & Summary13:01:2018 Langkawi, Malaysia: Although there were a few little ripples on Kua Harbour, PRO Simon James and his race team found 9 knots on the coastal course area to the East of Langkawi and it was full steam ahead to finish the regatta. Two windward/leeward races and it was all over. Then back to the marina to pack up the yachts and the closing dinner and prize presentation party. In some classes the overall result was already decided but they were all out on the water, in an act of sportsmanship to enjoy the final races. With only a couple of points separating the leaders, all eyes were on the IRC 1, Multihull, Club and Ocean Rover classes to see who would come out on top. Although struggling with the wind strength all week, racing was held each day on a variety of courses and everyone is happy with how it has turned out. 12:01:2018 Langkawi, Malaysia: Overnight the rain petered out and by morning clear sky and a light North Easterly breeze greeted the sailors at breakfast time. Friday being the day off in Langkawi, the breeze also decided to take a break and the postponement flag went up to hold everyone ashore, while PRO Simon James and his race team scoured both the outside course area and Kua Harbour for any sign of wind. For 4 1/2 hours the radio crackled with direction changes and reports of 1 to 2 knots. Lunch came and went as the bar trade increased, then finally the call went out that 5 to 6 knots from the East had arrived and a course was hastily set in the channel in front of the yacht club. Racing finally got underway with short windward/leeward courses for the IRC classes and passage race for the cruising classes. RLIR - Rain interrupts play...

Goto AY Race Report 311:01:2018 Langkawi, Malaysia: With good intentions and a favourable weather forecast, the fleet headed out to contest the 'Round the Island' race. The starts went ok, in a 5 knot North Easterly but soon faded and the yachts proceeded in slow motion as they gybed downwind. The big boats made it down to the bottom of the island in reasonable time, leaving the rest of the fleet on the horizon. While this was going on, gray clouds were building up over the tall peaks, which didn't look good for the return leg up Kua Harbour. A slight wind shift and increase in speed and the smaller yachts descended on the turning gate with glee. Whilst making their way towards the harbour entrance, down came the rain, turning the course into a parking lot and dried up all the fun. Fortunately for most the classes, the times were taken as they passed the gates and the end result was calculated from the last gate. 10:01:2018 Langkawi, Malaysia: The heavy downpour last night during the Opening Ceremony, heralded the arrival of the NE monsoon trade wind. A short delay this morning while the breeze settled in and the start sequence was underway, in blue sky and 8 to 10 knots to propel the yachts on their way. Two races for all classes consisted of windward/leeward and passage courses, within the confines of Kua Harbour. As the breeze is likely to fade in the afternoon, PRO Simon James didn't want to chance it with a third race and decided to call it a day and head back to the comfort of the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club for late lunch and refreshments. PRO Simon James decided to send the yachts back to the yacht club and wait for any improvements. At 1330 the postponement flag was dropped and crews scurried back out onto Kua Harbour. More delays as the breeze changed direction and finally settled on a sea breeze, to send the fleet on short windward/leeward courses. As they finished the dark clouds rolled in from the West and once again become unstable. 28 December, 2017: 2200hrs While everyone seemed to be preoccupied with the Line Honours protest and decision, time has run out for the 49 IRC yachts still at sea and Matt Allen's brand new TP52 Ichi Ban is the IRC overall and Division 1 winner, that takes home the prestigious Tattersall’s Cup for their efforts. Of the 103 boats entered this year 98 yachts are racing for the overall handicap and class results. While the elapsed time records were being broken, up ahead by the big boats, Ichi Ban also set a new record for a conventionally ballasted yacht (not water ballasted and not canting keel) of 1 day, 19 hours, 10 minutes and 20 seconds. International Jury Chairman, John Rountree said: “Wild Oats XI on port had to keep clear of LDV Comanche under Rule 10. Wild Oats XI failed to keep clear while tacking – Rule 13. LDV Comanche luffed to avoid a collision – Rule 14. Wild Oats XI did not comply with Sailing Instruction (S.I.) 20.1a to do a two-turn penalty for breaking the rule of part 2 occurring prior to clearing mark Zulu. Wild Oats XI smashed last year’s record of one day 13hrs 31mins 20secs by after crossing the Castray Esplanade finish line at 21:48:50 this evening, in the new time of one day 8hrs 48mins 50secs, taking 4hrs 42mins 30secs of Perpetual LOYAL’s time. 1230hrs, December 27, 2017: In the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, the two leading supermaxis LDV Comanche and Wild Oats XI are heading to a race record finish in the Derwent tonight. They are each sailing down the Tasmanian east coast at 20-30 knots before a strong north-easterly wind. LDV Comanche held an 11 mile lead but the eight-time winner Wild Oats XI has struck back and graphically has a half mile lead on the approaches to Tasman Island. The computer prediction shows a finish for both after 7pm tonight, though that could extend to the later evening once they turn at Tasman Island and tackle Storm Bay and the river. The good news is that the Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting a continuing north-easterly in the river tonight, which, while not from a favourable direction, at least represents continuing wind. 26 December 2017: Black Jack, the light weather flyer of the four 100 foot super maxis racing for line honours in the 2017 Rolex Sydney Hobart took full advantage of the light, easterly conditions on Sydney Harbour this afternoon to lead her contemporaries out of the Heads. Beneath a moody, overcast sky, skipper Mark Bradford steered the lean, black hulled Queensland yacht through a textbook start while his big three rivals, LDV Comanche, Wild Oats XI and InfoTrack at times looked out of sorts.
With 628 miles of racing ahead of her in the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s 73rd running of the race, LDV Comanche chose a safe, somewhat lonely start at the pin end of the line, unfavoured in this light easterly breeze. Goto AY Race Report 5 & Summary9th December 2017: After blowing the birds out of the trees all week, the North Easterly finally gave up the ghost and left the fleet floating around on a glassy seaway, with Race Officers scanning the horizon for wind ripples to appear. Two hours went by before PRO Ross Chisholm found some consistency from the ESE breeze on the Southern Course A and went into the starting sequence. No such luck on the Northern Course B and after four hours waiting around, PRO Simon James sent the cruising fleet home without a start. The leaders of various cruising classes rejoiced without even lifting a finger, while the racing classes battled it out on one short windward/leeward course, with some detrimental effects on the overall results. 8th December 2017: As the troublesome low pressure system closes on the Indian coast, it's all change in its wake. The heavy storm deluge overnight in Phuket, heralded the arrival of the true North East monsoon trade wind. Clear blue sky, with 6 knots at start time, increased to 14 by the end of racing and provided a great day of racing. All the Cruising classes embarked on a Southern island race, while the racers concentrated on windward/ leeward races to break the deadlock and set out their stalls, before tomorrows final showdown. The lighter conditions produced a few upsets and some changes in the order, that suited heavy weather sailors earlier in the week. Goto AY Race Report 36th December 2017: Despite the weather forecast predicting the brisk morning breeze to slow down, this was not the case, as crews made their way out to the race course. By start time 18 to 20 knots, tending from the East South East, with the highest gusts reaching 26 knots, produced some fast and furious racing. Two coastal races for the cruising classes and up to three windward/leeward races for the racing classes, that made it through the day. Ultimately the damage rate increased and many retirements with broken equipment, one dismasting and bruised egos were recorded, which brings the regatta to a conclusion for the irrepairable cases. With the lay day looming tomorrow, a well earned rest for some, while others will be making hurried repairs to continue through to Saturday. 5th December 2017: As the low pressure system is rapidly moving to the North West and deeper into Bay of Bengal towards India, the Easterly flow is beginning to fade away in Phuket and the sky is very overcast, with scattered showers on the horizon. South island courses for the Cruising Classes and one windward / leeward race, followed by a lengthy island course for the racing classes, has the race schedule on track, with some races in hand. Racing started in 14 to 18 knot Easterly but faded through the day, as yachts struggled to reach the turning points, in the strong out going tidal current. As these conditions are likely to continue for the next couple of days, Race Director and PRO Simon James will have to play his lucky cards, to complete the schedule, before the NE tradewind is predicted to return by the weekend. King's Cup - Thrills and spills on opening day...

Goto AY Race Report 14th December 2017: The meandering tropical disturbance that crossed over Northern Sumatra, has reformed as it headed off into the Bay of Bengal and produced a strong East North Easterly flow, with gusts over 20 knots, to provide plenty of excitement and carnage on opening day. The Race Officers on both courses fired of three races for most classes, while the Premier Cruisers completed a passage race around the islands and Multihull Cruising two races. Some breakages and collisions marred the day for some, notably John Newnham's Twin Sharks cleanly slicing off the transom of Ray Waldron's Surf Patrol in the Firefly 850 Sports class, while most crews relished the challenge and quickly got down to work. December 1st 2017: Second overall in the IRC 1 class, at the Raja Muda Regatta last week and after contesting 3 events this season, Fred Kinmonth/Nick Burns Sydney GTS 43 Otonomos Mandrake III, take over top spot from Nick Southward's J-109 Whisky Jack by 7.5 points and lead the 2017-18 AYGP Rankings. By winning all eight IRC 4 races and scoring maximum 18 points, David Fuller and the chartered Beneteau 44.7 Fujin enter the AYGP Rankings in a creditable 9th place. 25th Nov 2017: An early morning downpour put a dampener on proceedings but stopped in time for the crucial deciding races to take place. If your wondering how to cause mass evacuation from a bar full of seasoned sailors, just sound the horn and lower the AP flag and it's deserted within minutes. As it turned out, only 45 minutes delay for the starting sequence and the fleet were underway with an 8-10 knot North Easterly pumping down Bass Harbour. The Cruising Classes and IRC 4 were dispatched on an island course, while IRC 1 and Premier Cruising on two windward/leeward races, to decide their fate. Uncharacteristically the racing till today, has been held in dry conditions and good breeze, all the way from Port Klang and with four of the five classes open for the taking, it would have been a shame to finish the regatta sitting in the yacht club. Goto AY Race Report 524th Nov 2017: Despite only finishing the race from Pinang in the early hours of the morning, most yachts in contention for podium places were back on Bass Harbour, ready to contest windward/leeward and point to point races, all awhile anticipating to improve their standing plus get in amongst the silverware. The North Easterly did not disappoint and 15 to 18 knots with gusts in the low 20's, created the perfect scenario, on the penultimate day of this 28th edition. As expected the starts were tight and hitting target speeds in clear air, on the crucial first leg became the formula to success. 23rd Nov 2017: A little over one hour of delay, as the fleet played 'follow me' out of Penang Harbour, until they reached the incoming North Easterly breeze, which quickly reached 10 knots and PRO Jerry Rollin released the classes in reverse order. Immediately it was decision time, to head out to sea or tack over towards the land. As the crews cranked on the sheets, the tacticians realised the seaward course was only 5 to 8 degrees from laying the finish line in Langkawi, so gambled that the breeze would lift them, as they progressed along the course and turns out it paid off handsomely. Two windward/leeward races for the IRC classes and one point to point race for the cruising classes, keeps the program on schedule. A mixture of back row starts and covering tactics in some classes, changes the order again and some head scratching by crews searching for more speed. 21st Nov 2017: For the first time in many years, the predicted North Westerly blew throughout the night and into race day, so the fleet were blessed when the 1300 start time came around, with 10 to 13 knots and the line set to the west of the passage between Pangkor and Pangkor Laut. As the course was straight into the wind, the first part required, either tacking out to sea or along the coast of Pangkor and making their way towards the mainland. Slightly veering and increasing as they approached the Kra Bank, enabled the yachts to harden up and aim closer towards the finish line. After IRC 1 and Premier Cruisers finished, the NW'ly started to fade in the lee of Penang and the yachts that were looking good for handicap honours, slowed down to a crawl and watched their chances wash away in the strong current. Goto AY Race Report 1 19th Nov 2017: Despite unsettled weather for the past week, as the yachts motored out to the start line, the North Westerly announced its arrival and by start time 7 to 10 knots, saw the fleet away in reverse order and on schedule. The out going tide caught a couple yachts offside and returned quickly to restart. A couple of tacks to clear the Kapar power station jetty, then fine reaching for a while with out any rain clouds in sight for a change and back hard on the wind, through a minefield of ups and downs, for the rest of the way. Phillip Turner's Reichel/Pugh 66 Alive skippered by Duncan Hine, worked their way through the fleet and by the half way mark, took over the lead and after 9hrs 44mins 6secs of racing, claimed line honours at 2319hrs. The land breeze arrived to bring some relief from beating to windward and the remaining fleet moved along the coast, making a direct bee line to the finish. Goto AY Race Report 1

Goto AY Pre-Regatta Report17th Nov 2017: A small armada of foreign racing yachts, are tied up at the Royal Selangor Yacht Club in Port Klang and ready to take on local sailors, during the 28th edition of this unique, island hopping regatta, up the West Coast of Peninsula Malaysia. Thirty yachts, divided into six classes, will go under starters orders and are looking forward to some close racing and friendly Malaysian hospitality. The 8 day challenge consists of three overnight passage races, totaling 260nm, 3 days of harbour racing in Penang and Langkawi, plus requires lots of stamina for five prize giving parties, along the way. Presently the SW monsoon is making way for the NE tradewind and recently produced some unsettled coastal weather, so teams must be prepared to reduce their sails and change racing tactics to suite the conditions. The defending champion skippered by Australia’s Joseph Dennis O’Keeffe is proving hard to beat this year, and it will require some exceptional sailing by the other top crews if they're to get past the current leaders. Second in today’s 15-miler was My Side Team from South Africa. Helmsman Mark Sadler commented: “We started in 10 to 12 knots of breeze, got off to a cracking start and we led to the top mark We had a nice sail around the back of the island, but then Vanhang passed us on one of the shifts. (See Race Report 1) While that was going on, the huge Chinese media contingent were entertained with a Press Conference, followed by the Opening Ceremony of the America's Cup and Emirates Team New Zealand Pavilion at the marina. Goto RHKYC Race Reports...21st Oct 1800hrs: Vincenzo Onorato’s Cookson 50 Mascalzone Latino sailed into Nha Trang last night at 18h 46m 31s to take the win in IRC Racer 0 and IRC Racer Overall! The Italian boat was a cool 2h 49m 55s ahead of Joachim Isler and Drew Taylor’s Ambush who are 2nd place in IRC Racer Overall. Mascalzone Latino owner Vincenzo Onorato commented on the Race on arrival, “It's the very first time we have joined the Volvo Hong Kong to Vietnam Race. It was amazing because we did the Race in 53h 26m 31s and we did around 770nm actual distance sailed - unbelievable! 18th Oct 1800hrs: A beautiful day in Hong Kong harbour with blue skies and a north easterly breeze of 10kts for the start of IRC Racer 0 and 1 in the Volvo Hong Kong to Vietnam Race. 10 boats were on the start line with the IRC Racer 2 division setting out 25 hours earlier. The horn sounded at 1320hrs - a few minutes late due to a boat hooking the pin end of the line before the start. All boats had a great start and got away cleanly. It was a bit of a tacking battle after the line as many boats stuck to the right side of the harbour to avoid marine traffic and exclusion zones. Goto RHKYC Race Reports

Goto Mid-October AYGP News.October 17th 2017: Despite the Volvo China Coast Regatta being cut short by the passing Tropical Storm Khanun, the RHKYC race committee were forewarned and fired away 6 races on the first two days, to complete the series before the Typhoon warning was raised. The sailors enjoyed close racing in building conditions and despite turning into a low scoring round, some Eastern Circuit Skippers and Yachts have entered the AsianYachting Grand Prix (AYGP) Rankings in good order. Five wins in the IRC 3 Class for Nick Southward's J-109 Whisky Jack becomes the highest scorer on the AYGP Rankings at the China Coast Regatta, while the 2015-16 & 2016-17 AYGP Skipper and Yacht of the Year, Steve Manning skippering his newly acquired A40 Red Rum, scored four wins in the IRC 2 class and enter the 2017-18 Rankings in 6th place. 14:10:2017: Day 2 turned into the final day of the Volvo China Coast Regatta due to Tropical Storm Khanun approaching Hong Kong. Racing carried on as planned for the day but as the last boats crossed the line in their final race it was announced that due to the likelihood of a Typhoon 3 signal being issued and still being in force tomorrow, all racing would be cancelled for the final day of the regatta. A northerly breeze of 15 to 22kts greeted the racers as they reached the race track south east of Lamma Island this morning. IRC 0, 1, 2 and 3 were sent on two windward/leewards and an island course with IRC Premier sailing one island course. The HKPN division sailed one windward/leeward and an island course. 13:10:2017: After kicking off the 2017 Volvo China Coast Regatta with a welcome party at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s main clubhouse on Kellett Island last night, racers this morning descended on the Club’s Middle Island Clubhouse this morning before making their way to the race course which was located south east of Lamma Island. Racing started in a northerly breeze of 8 to10kts that dropped throughout the day. Crews were confident they could do better and pick up a few places, to improve their standings on the final day. As the SW trade wind picked up, four races were completed in the IRC and PY classes, and three races for the one-design and Multihull classes. All eyes were on the IRC A class, as two points separated 1st to 3rd places and these races would determine the eventual outcome. Goto AY Race Report 2August 20th: The combined IRC A & B classes headed out of the Johor Strait on the SMU Presidents Cup, while other classes continued on with windward/leeward and point to point races in the Strait. It certainly wasn't incident free, as the Port favoured start line saw some jostling at the pin end and the downwind mark on the SB20 course was reported to be crowded and very entertaining. Eight to twelve knots from the SW with blue sky and sunshine, made a perfect day for a sail, as the SB20 International Cup, Access 2.3's for disabled sailors and six windsurfing classes bring the Inter-Tertiary Windsurfing Championship (ITWC) 2017 to their conclusion. August 19th: With the breeze favouring the Southerly quadrant, the courses were set across the Johor Strait, making for short windward/leeward races. It also fluctuated between 5 to 10 knots and changed in direction with scattered showers, the occasional sand barge and Malaysian ferry's plying through the courses, made it an interesting day. Both race committees persisted and three races for the racing classes and four for the others were completed. Six windsurfing classes and Access 2.3's for disabled sailors, opened their accounts and by the end of the day, all the youthful exuberance shown at the morning race briefing, was replaced with up and down results and what to do tomorrow to improve the standings. This event is Singapore's premier racing event, full of youthful enthusiasm from the SMU organising team, combined with Raffles Marina excellent facilities, have built a reputation for lively fleet racing and fun filled post race parties. Goto AY Race Report 4 & SummaryJuly 23rd Cape Panwa: A small clockwise pressure system to the South of Phuket, in the Northern reaches of the Malacca Strait, is pushing the SW'ly monsoon flow, out into the Bay of Bengal, to the West of Phuket and replacing it with its own light South Westerly breeze. This disturbed air flow has confused weather forecasters over the last few days and despite the grim predictions, local conditions have prevailed and defied the forecast, with four days of racing in 5 to 12 knots and managed to complete 8 races for the racing class and 6 for the cruisers. July 22nd Cape Panwa: Initially the postponement flag went up onshore, then 45 minutes later it came down as PRO Simon James found 5 knots steady SW breeze, out on the race course. Time to scramble and after a short delay, racing got underway with two races for the racing classes and a single passage race for the cruising classes. That makes it a total of 7 races for the racers and 5 for the cruisers, to constitute a series, even if tomorrow is cancelled. Its a case of the rich getting richer in the overall stakes, as the odds on favourites make a meal out of it and carry on regardless. July 21st Cape Panwa: Continuing to defy the weather prediction, PRO Simon James fired away two races for the racing classes and a lengthy passage race for the cruising classes. Averaging about 8 knots from the SW, was enough to stem the strong outgoing tide and produce various tactical options on the way to go. Some yachts seem to have found an extra gear and visibly can be seen accelerating away from the line and have recorded multiple wins. July 20th Cape Panwa: Despite the grim weather forecast, 41 boat crews were greeted by a steady 8 to 10 knot SW'ly and rolling seaway, that built up to 15k during the afternoon. PRO Simon James and the race team got to work quickly and managed to fire away 3 races for the racing classes and 2 for the cruisers, just in case the prediction comes to fruition in the coming days. Several retirements with boat damage and a nasty collision with a spectator boat were recorded. Seventeen monohull yachts in three IRC classes, versus 24 Multihull's divided into Racing, Cruising, Firefly and Corsair one-design classes. Over the next four days they are preparing for some high-octane racing on Phuket’s South East coast. It's also the first of the 13 five star events, that make up the 2017-18 AsianYachting Grand Prix (AYGP) and an excellent opportunity for SE Asian based teams, to rack up some AYGP Skipper and Yacht of the Year points, early in the season. July 16th Ao Chalong, Phuket: The remaining yachts approached the start line with trepidation, as the SW'ly gusts were over 20 knots. Flying the hull or hulls became the order of the day and if you weren't 'driving like you stole it', expect to be at the back of the fleet. The daring young men in their flying machines, marched away at the front and ended up winning the 4 classes. As the breeze increased to 25 knots before the second race, the Firefly's and Pulse 600's decided to call it a day, while three Stealth cats braved it out. While the others returned to the comfort of the Phuket Yacht Club and wisely choose to preserve their rides for Phuket Raceweek, starting next Thursday. July 15th Ao Chalong, Phuket: The strong wind warning issued by the Phuket Weather Bureau proved to be correct and produced plenty of exciting moments, equipment failure and a spectacular nose dive, followed by a capsize. The saving grace was, that there were no rain squalls, normally associated with the blustery SW monsoon. Each day has produced some carnage and after two windward/leeward races today, the fleet is drastically reduced. The prevailing breeze is predicted to increase tomorrow and some doubt exist on whether to race, with a wait and see attitude. July 14th Ao Chalong, Phuket: The day started with a light South Westerly but as the passing storm stayed overland, the side effect was for severe changes in wind direction and speed. PRO Simon James elected to send the entire fleet on Course 16, out of Ao Chalong, around Ko Bon and back inside Ao Chalong for some dog legs before finishing. The boats that nailed the start line in clear wind, established early leads but selecting the correct line inshore, out of the current and stronger breeze, paid dividends. As the breeze wasn't steady to set windward/leeward courses for the second race, the racers were sent on the same course, while the Pulse 600's did a short inshore race. The Kiwi team dominated the final stage of the 35th America’s Cup, winning eight races to ORACLE TEAM USA’s one race win, giving the New Zealanders a final winning scoreline of 7-1. Grant Dalton, CEO of Emirates Team New Zealand, also announced that the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron has accepted the challenge of Circolo della Vela Sicilia, who will be the Challenger of Record for the 36th America's Cup and will be represented by Luna Rossa.
