Place
TOTGR 08 firmly into your racing campaign
Discussions are underway to include the Top
of the Gulf Regatta into the AY
Grand
Prix Championships if sufficient racing class yachts come
to Pattaya (1st - 5th May) and join in the fun. Foreign boats planning
their 2008 campaign should consider combining the TOTGR with the Koh Samui
Regatta to be held late May. Ocean Marina can take boats up to 3 meters
and plans are afoot for re-dredging prior to the regatta. OMYC will offer
dry storage FOC for boats up to 5m draft and weighing less than 18 tonnes
prior to the regatta. Boats with drafts over 3m can be moored outside
with ferry service from the Marina, so no need for anyone to get wet feet!

Battle of the billionaires goes to LE 1 - EB zip
The New York Supreme Court Judge Herman Cahn has ruled in favour of Golden
Gate Yacht Club in its case against the Société Nautique
de Gèneve. This result means that the Spanish Yacht Club (CNEV)
will no longer be the Challenger of Record for the 33rd America's Cup.
The Golden Gate Yacht Club (GGYC), representing Larry Ellison's BMW Oracle
Racing team becomes the Challenger of Record, welcomed the ruling by the
New York State Supreme Court that its challenge for the 33rd America’s
Cup was valid. 'We are very pleased by the decision as it enables everyone
to focus on getting the Cup back on track quickly,' said Russell Coutts,
CEO of the club’s BMW Oracle Racing team. He said GGYC wanted to
see a conventional America’s Cup regatta in Valencia and is planning
to speak with Alinghi as soon as possible to organize a meeting seeking
a mutual consent challenge. Ernesto Bertarelli, President of Alinghi,
says: 'We are disappointed that a technicality made the CNEV invalid and
we are now looking forward to discussions with the Golden Gate Yacht Club
to keep the America’s Cup functioning.'
GGYC’s
first preferences would be to:
1. Seek to agree rules with all competitors along the lines of the October
17 'nine points' compromise proposal and race a conventional America’s
Cup competition in Valencia in 2009.
2. If a Deed of Gift challenge went ahead, the club would seek to race
under the AC90 monohull rule already published. If Alinghi did not agree
to that, in multi-hulls.
3. In all scenarios, GGYC would seek by mutual consent to have a Challenger
Selection Series with as many challengers as possible.
'We will immediately endeavour to meet with the other challengers to mutually
agree a fair set of rules negotiated with all the other teams,' Coutts
said. 'We will be very happy if we can put the last few months behind
us and get on sailing.'

Singapore named as Volvo Ocean Race stopover...
The island nation of Singapore was confirmed as the Southeast Asian stopover
for the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09 with the signing of an agreement to bring
the famous ocean marathon to the resort island of Sentosa. The fleet,
which is scheduled to stop over in Singapore in late December 2008, will

will stage the second in-port race of the series (the first will be in
Alicante, Spain, ahead of the leg one start) and it will provide a dramatic
backdrop to the inshore racing. Six boats from the US, Russia, Spain and
Sweden have now confirmed for the 2008-09 event which will be the 10th
running of the Volvo Ocean Race. The race route is nearing finalisation
with the offshore start set for Alicante on 11 October, 2008, following
an in-port race a week earlier. The race is currently scheduled to last

ISAF taking allot of flak over Olympic events
The ten sailing events for the 2012 Olympic Games have been decided by
the ISAF Council during the 2007 ISAF Annual Conference. ISAF President
Göran Petersson led the ISAF Council in over two hours of debate
and discussion before the ten events were decided. Of the ten events selected,
keelboat match racing for women is the only not featured on the program
for the 2008 Olympic Sailing Competition, with the multihull event being
eliminated for 2012. It will be the first time women's match racing has
been on the Olympic program, with the multihull event having been part
of the Olympics continuously since 1976. The selection of the ten events
is subject to final confirmation from the International Olympic Committee,
with the equipment to then be selected by the ISAF Council in November
2008.-- Complete report: http://www.sailing.org/21257.php
It
was always going to be controversial reducing the Olympic events from
eleven to ten, but many believe that the decision by the ISAF Council
to leave out the multihull disenfranchises a whole group of sailors and
makes ISAF an organisation for monohull sailors only. The UK Catamaran
Racing Association, has set up a new petition, aimed at the IOC. If you
disagree with ISAF's recent decision regarding the multihull, then please
sign the petition which can be found at http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/multihullinolympics/index.html

Successful medical evacuation of Clipper crew member
The successful medical evacuation of Clipper crew member Tony Peters took
place this evening at 18:35 GMT from New York to a National Sea Rescue
Institute Durban rescue craft and then via ambulance to a Durban city
hospital. The 47-year-old paramedic from Hanworth, Berkshire in the UK
sustained a head injury on the second day of Race 4 from Durban to Fremantle
when a large wave swept him across the cockpit. Clipper staff member Anna
Wardley accompanied Tony to hospital where he was examined and x-rayed.
Relevant treatment for the head injury and a broken nose was administered
and arrangements are currently being made to repatriate him back to the
UK. Tony hopes to be able to rejoin the race at a later stage. Clipper

tirelessly to ensure a successful medical evacuation. More news and follow

86 yachts for 63rd Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race 2007
The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia are delighted to announce a larger
than anticipated fleet of 86 yachts ranging from 10m to 30 metres have
nominated for Australia’s premier bluewater event. Once again the
heavier classic yachts from a bygone era of boat building will line up
with the sleek and modern at 1pm on Wed 26 Dec (Boxing Day) when the start
of the iconic 628nm yacht race will showcase Sydney Harbour to the world
for the 63rd time. To have seven states and territories of Australia represented
is a great feature of the race, and the event’s international flavour
and reputation is enhanced considerably by the nine visiting competitors,
including six from Great Britain, USA, New Zealand and the first ever
application for entry from Mexico.
Bob
Oatley's Wild Oats XI could become only the second yacht in the history
of the race to take line honours over three consecutive years. However,
Wild Oats XI will face stiff competition from fellow Australian entry
Skandia, UK maxi Cityindex Leopard and New Zealand's Maximus. The line
honours record currently stands at 1 day, 18 hrs, 40 mins and 10 secs,
set by Wild Oats XI in 2005. To view the list of entries go to http://rolexsydneyhobart.com//yachts.asp?key=526

Artemis dismasted off Cape Finistere.
Jonny Malbon & Graham 'Gringo' Tourrell are safe and sound. Most of
the skippers were desperately seeking the slightest puff of wind since
the start but the weather conditions changed radically on day 4 of the
Transat Jacques Vabre as they sailed down the Bay of Biscay. They had
to deal with up to 25-30 knots in rough seas. Jonny mentioned two broaches
and a huge wave laying the boat on her side in 25-28 knots of wind. The
two skippers reduced their sail area as they expected the wind to increase
up to 30 knots. Jonny and Graham are shattered but safe, according to
the Artemis press release, after the mast broke close to the deck and
fell forward onto the boat, along with the boom and the sail. The rig
was cut free and Artemis headed towards the Spanish town of Vigo, which
is 100 miles east.
