EDITORIAL

After a hum dinger Race 7 Ernesto Bertarelli's Alinghi SUI 100
skippered by Brad Butterworth emerged the winner of the 32nd America's
Cup by a mere 2 seconds. Team New Zealand must be applauded for their
sheer tenacity and once again become a world force in the America’s
Cup even if they came-up short of the ultimate prize.
Despite the earlier
weather problems what a wonderful yachting spectacle has been bestowed
upon the world. We have had everything, exciting pre-start action, close
racing, numerous lead changes, several upsets and defining moments with
the pendulum swinging either way during each race and a real battle of
self belief and crew determination producing match racing of the highest
order historically never seen before in AC races. One lead change is rare
and stir the emotions, two or more are miraculous at the top level of
racing. Most America's Cups have been shutouts, or nearly so. Five of
the last six were clean 4-zip sweeps. While pundits all over the world
have come up with almost every cliche under the sun one important fact
still remains intact - The first boat around the first mark, of the first
race has always gone on to win the cup. Although here at AY
we predicted a Kiwi victory, after watching Alinghi round the first mark
way back on day 1 we had our doubts on a Kiwi win ever since. Call it
superstitious or what but I know many a punter that has won lots of money
on this outcome regardless of the contestants.
After
a tour of Valencia last week Malaysian aspirations to enter the America's
Cup were widely reported by the International
media. Yachting journo's have asked "Is this a joke, just some
political grandstanding or is Peter Gilmour leading the politicians on
a walk down the garden path to financial obscurity? The under funded China
Team could only manage to win one race by default during the Luis Vuitton
Cup and Larry Ellison's highly fancied BMW Oracle Team reportedly spent
up to US$200 million only to get knocked out in the semi final stage.
Can the country really afford that sort of money on a whim and a prayer
campaign when the National Sailing Association (MYA) are struggling to
raise enough funds to hire coaches to train sailors and buy the odd optimist
or laser to compete at regional games.
The
extravaganza of hosting the annual Monsoon Cup is a long way short of
competing at the AC and does not automatically earn them the rights to
host the America's Cup. One has to go out and win it first as Peter Gilmour
only well knows after a series of failed attempts in the past. As the
sport is still in its infancy in Malaysia wouldn't a lesser amount of
money be better spent developing the sport at home first and look at hosting
events like the ISAF Nations Cup and Youth Match Racing that will benefit
local sailors in the long run.
Meanwhile
the 2007-08
Season gets underway in July with Phuket
Race Week, Sail
Indonesia and the RSYC
Regatta in Singapore. From all reports the fun and games
at these events are much better than the lack of camaraderie and friendships
experienced amongst the teams in Valencia. Sail Indonesia continues to
go from strength to strength being oversubscribed with over 110 boats
again heading our way. This will undoubtedly help fill some marinas, be
it only short term but hopefully give the marine tourism and yachting
industry a significant boost that everyone at the grass roots level have
been working so hard at improving.

Testing the waters...
Peter Ahern is taking his newly acquired Farr 40 YO!2 on a outing to Thailand
for Phuket
Race Week. Although the only true racing class A yacht to
compete he will have his hands full taking on the very experienced local
sailors that over the years have dominated other IRC classes. Scott Duncanson's
speedy Phuket 8 Som Tam Express should match them for speed around
the course. Ben Copely's Beneteau First 40.7 Asia Spirit, David
Lindahl's Swan 42 La Samudra and John Vause's Ruby Tuesday
have all won here before and have consistently picked up handicap victories
at other major events in Thailand and Malaysia. Peter Ahern's aim is to
test some changes made recently as he contemplates further alterations
to make a full on campaign to win the King's Cup in December.

Youth Match Racing coming to Malaysia
The Royal Selangor Yacht Club, in association with the RSYC Sailing Academy,
and with the approval of the Malaysian Yachting Association, is pleased
to announce the inaugural 'Selangor Gapurna International Youth Match
Racing Regatta', believed to be the first of its kind in Malaysia (and
perhaps South East Asia). Participants are all required to be under the
age of 26 at the start of the Regatta. The event, fully sponsored by the
Gapurna Group, will see 12 teams of international standard youth sailors
competing on the testing waters of the Klang Estuary. Indications are
that the entry will be full well in advance of the event, with provisional
entries so far from Australia (2), Philippines (1), Hong Kong (1), Thailand
(1) Malaysia (3) and Singapore (1). This is a superb indicator as to the
need for organised youth specific keelboat one-design regattas in the
region. All enquiries should be directed to Dave Moxey at: dave@rsyc.com.my

Clipper skippers and crew announced
More than 350 international sailors taking part in the Clipper 07-08 Round
the World Yacht Race have finally discovered who their skipper and team-mates

the race a truly global event. Many live in the cities sponsoring the
yachts, or have close links with them, so are proud and delighted to discover
they will be representing their city, state or country. Forty three men

the globe with skipper, Mark Preedy. They include: Hizam Haiyon, 34, from
Singapore and sponsored as a round the world crew member by his employer,

Good on ya mate...
Kiwi Graham Dalton onboard Open 50 Southern Man - AGD, completed his solo

Although Dalton was plagued with problems to his keel and was unable to
officially compete on the final leg of the VELUX 5 Oceans Race, he decided
to continue on regardless to complete the race course but is not classed
as a finisher. He thereby completes the 'spiritual journey' in memory
of his beloved deceased son, Tony. His son tragically died of cancer and
the boat is called Southern man AGD, his son's initials. Full rundown

Warning to all offshore racers.
DK Yachts are warning all offshore racers to sit up and
take notice when one of their World Champion Mumm 30, Farr 40 or Mills
DK46 lines up on the starting grid. They just keep turning up and sailing
away with all the major prizes. Robert Youngjohns’ San Francisco
based DK46 Zephyra won Class 1 of the 2007 Yachting Cup, run
by the San Diego Yacht Club for the second time in a row. Zephyra
turned in a consistent set of results to take the Big Boat class from
some of the best West Coast boats and sailing talent, including her sistership
Valkyrie where the two DK 46’s are the smaller boats in
the fleet. After five straight bullets in last year’s event they
had to work even harder this year after being moved up a class. Serious

Pasha Bulker refloated...
The bulk carrier Pasha
Bulker grounded at Nobbys Beach, Newcastle Harbour, on Friday 8th June.
More than a dozen recreational vessels went aground during the stormy
conditions on Sydney Harbour. The Cremorne Wharf collapsed and more than
30 vessels required towing after the gale-force conditions. The ship's
crew of 22 were safely airlifted from the vessel on day one of the incident.
A ten member salvage team and three members of the crew were air lifted
aboard to assess the structure of the vessel. Salvage tugs were sent to
Newcastle to assist in the salvage operation. The salvage team aboard
the vessel made a detailed assessment and initial indications showed a
breach in what is known as the double bottom space but there was no oil
leakage. The vessel was finally towed to sea by three salvage tugs at
about 9.40pm on Monday 2nd July. News on the ship's condition is being
posted on http://www.boatingoz.com.au/?Page=3425

New Singaporean CIQ procedures
AY
has received some additional information regarding the new customs and
immigration check in and out arrangements in Singapore. The 3 locations
yachts currently use are Raffles Marina, Republic of Singapore and Changi
Sailing Club, there are other options available. Two on water immigration
anchorages for commercial vessels are currently in operation. Yachts can
use these check in on the water with customs and immigration. Owners/crew/passengers
can expect to get up to a maximum of 30 day visa subject to nationality/valid
passports, port clearances and crew/passenger lists. There is no charge
for this service. Western quarantine and immigration anchorage, west of
The Sisters Islands. Eastern anchorage is at the entrance to West Johor
Straits between Frontier and South angler navigation marks. Vessels requiring
clearance need to fly numeral pennants two over five and call Singapore
immigration on VHF channel 74 or their mobile No. 90888605. Another alternative
which superyachts use is to have an agent make all the arrangements, book
the pilot, meet the vessel, arrange the berthing. The on the water arrangements
are used 24/7 by general commercial traffic, tugs, barges, many small/medium
cargo boats. It works well for ships/yachts with a small number of crew
and passengers. The Marinas/Club checking in costs SGD 50 plus taxi fares
for the immigration officer to and from the Sailing Club or marina.

Adrian's back at it again
On June 25th, British yachtsman Adrian Flanagan resumes his quest to sail
the first ever single-handed ‘vertical’ circumnavigation of
the globe. Flanagan, 46, set sail on the Alpha Global Expedition on 28th
October 2005 and covered 26,000 miles going west around Cape Horn to Nome,
Alaska where his 40ft stainless steel sloop, Barrabas has spent
the Arctic winter. Flanagan’s route will take him along Russia’s
Northern Sea Route. Success will see ‘Barrabas’ become the
first British flagged yacht to sail Russia’s Arctic coast and Flanagan,
the first sailor to achieve this feat single-handed. The distance from
Nome Alaska to the UK is 4,800 miles, the first 2,000 miles of which will
be through ice-strewn waters. The Russian government has granted Flanagan
special permission to make the attempt. The navigable window in the high
Arctic is very short and if Flanagan clears the ice fields he should be
mooring up at The Royal Southern Yacht Club in the Hamble River in early
September. Follow the expedition at: http://www.alphaglobalex.com/

Historic 44th Transpac Race sets sail this month
July 15 marks the start of the 2,225-mile 44th Transpacific Yacht Race
from Los Angeles to Honolulu, Hawaii. The eleven sailors team of 18- to
23-year-olds aboard Roy E. Disney's Morning Light Project will set a course
for Hawaii and expect to perform feverishly as one, trying to gain an
edge on the competition after a yearlong endeavor that will become a feature-length
movie to be released in theaters next spring. The film will show in vivid
detail the molding of young sailing talent, the melding into a team, and
the difficult and dangerous, yet highly rewarding task of racing on the
high seas. The Transpac field is set at 74. Starts for nine divisions
will be held off Point Fermin July 9, 12 and 15 aimed to compress the
finishes as much as is practical. Disney, 77, has "un-retired"
and rebuilt his beloved Pyewacket as a 94ft racing boat with wings in
an attempt to win back the elapsed-time record he had held since 1999,
before Morning Glory broke it in 2005, the last year the biennial race
was held. That record is 6 days 16 hours 4 minutes 11 seconds. Pyewacket
was second, 2 1/2 hours behind. Follow the action at: http://www.transpacificyc.org

UK forges ahead with alcohol limit for boaters
UK Transport Minister Stephen Ladyman has announced that he will be pressing
ahead with the introduction of legislation to limit boat owners from navigating
while under the influence of alcohol. A limit of 80 milligrams per 100
milliliters of blood will apply to those involved in the navigation of
a vessel greater than 7m (23ft) in length and/or capable of a maximum
speed of more than 7kts. Rod Carr, CEO of UK's Royal Yachting Association,
said: "The RYA's view remains unchanged from that of 2004. We believe
that new legislation is unnecessary because there is still no evidence
of the existence of an extensive problem relating to alcohol and boating."

Oops sorry mate just dropping in...
Even before the 2007 Etchells World Championship in Cowes had began it
was a day of drama at the start of the practice race for GBR1352 Arbitrator,
helmed by Graham Bailey with Stephen Bailey and David Heritage crewing,
was seriously damaged in a port/starboard collision with GBR987 Bedrock.
The damage to Arbitrator was severe and the boat was initially feared
to be in danger of sinking. Graham Bailey takes up the story - 'The incident
happened in the pre-start about three minutes before the gun. We were
on starboard and we realised that the port tack boat hadn't seen us so
we began to tack to avoid them. The other boat tried to bear away round
the back of us but it was too late and they simply accelerated into us,
hitting us and then ripping through the aft quarter. The immediate call
was for lifejackets as the boat was rapidly filling but fortunately the
damage was all in the aft tank and the bulkhead held. As the first day
of racing was abandoned due to strong winds the only crew happy to see
no racing was that of GBR1352 Arbitrator who were busy through the night
affecting repairs to their boat following a major port/starboard incident
on the practice race start line. They relaunched the boat in the afternoon
and were ready to race the next morning. Scoring 31st in race 3 and a
remarkable 3rd place in race 4. Further information about the 2007 Etchells
World Championship can be found at http://www.etchellsworlds2007.org

MOTH European and World Championship
Lake Garda, Italy: Day 1, Race 1...was CARNAGE! Another day of 20 something
knot winds and short, sharp chop left a wake of destruction. The scene
on the field was bewildering. Boats were flying everywhere upwind and
downwind; lapping each other and stuffing it left right and centre. Every
mark rounding was a mine field of obstacles- moth wings in the air and
skippers scrambling to re-right. Occasionally, a mothie was to be found
hunched over the hull showing signs of having lost "the will to foil!"
Race II, saw a greater death toll, as the wind frothed and the lake bubbled.

TP52 Alicante Trophy Day 2 races recorded some mishaps, the most important
being the collision between Siemens and Cristabella. The Spanish boat

day.

of the first race.
