EDITORIAL
October sees the return
of the serious contenders in the racing class on the International stage
at the China
Coast Regatta and the biennial 656 nm Hong
Kong - Vietnam Race finishing in Nha Trang. Over the intervening
months Sam Chan has a new Ffree Fire (ex TP52 Flash)
and Paul Winkelmann's new Island Fling (ex TP52 Bambakou)
will be joining in the frey and expect to clean up on the day racing events
and set new records on long passage races. However they won't have it
all their own way though, as Frank Pong's Reichel Pugh 75 Jelik,
the Burns/Kinmonth Farr / Mills 51 Mandrake, Neil Pryde's Farr
52 Team Hi-Fi and Adam Wu Yi's Corby 41.5 Konka Hummingbird
from mainland China are expected to be in the running at the end of the
day.
With
the inclusion of Singapore's Bill Bremner's Sydney 40 Team F5 Foxy
Lady, Jonathan Mahony's Mumm 30 Happy Endings, Keith Dunn's
Mount Gay 30 Lunchcutter II and the two Royal Malaysian Navy
Farr 52's Zuhrah and Zuhal during November and Decembers
Raja Muda Selangor
Int Regatta and Phuket King's
Cup sees a formidable line up taking shape and a bumper
year in the making. Throw in all the World
Match Racing Tour stars competing at the Monsoon
Cup late Nov early Dec and it is easy to conclude that Asia
is indeed coming of age in the racing circles.
AsianYachting
will once again be conducting the AY
Grand Prix Skipper
and Yacht Championships
for racing class yachts over eight selected events (Malaysia 2, Hong Kong
2, Thailand 2, Singapore and the Philippines 1 a piece) that fairly grades
the skippers ability to successfully run a racing campaign in Asian waters
over the 2006-07
Season. If you intend joining any of these five star events,
we can only stress the importance of getting ready early or you just might
miss out on the great parties, exciting sailing and lots of fun.
Happy sailing were ever you are

"Unluckiest sailors of the month"
When you win the
battle but lose the title!
Aussies
Nathan Wilmot and Malcolm Page were
leading their British rivals down the last run, on track for their third
470 World Championship in a row, when they were yellow
flagged for pumping and lost the World title in controversial circumstances.
A very upset Malcolm Page commented "After being a point ahead going
into the medal race we started with an unlimited pumping flag up and worked
very hard to get to the last top mark in second position, 100 metres in
front of our GBR team opposition and with no capsizes, guaranteed of winning
the Championship. Half way down the last run, we got penalised by the
jury for pumping. The race committee apparently had dropped the pumping
flag at the 1st bottom mark. But with about 50 motor boats (average of
4 people per boat) and yelling amongst all the sailors and boats we did
not hear the sound signal (whistle). We were shocked and completed our
720 degree turn, but that left us in 8th position, behind the GBR team.....
We put in a protest at the finish (on water jury). They heard this but
said it was bad luck. So we lost the 2006 World Championship and feel
really ripped off as everyone in the boat park says we are the World Champs
again".
The
penultimate day of racing for the 2006 Breitling MedCup
season served up drama, excitement, bitter disappointment and relief in
equal measures for the crews of the 21 boats. The most talked about moment
was a dramatic collision between Stuart Robinson’s Santa
Ana Stay Calm and Jose Cusi’s Bribon,
with the King of Spain, SM Don Juan Carlos, aboard for his first race
at this Trofeo Balearia Ibiza y Formentera. Santa
Ana struck Bribon at the windward mark of the first race. Making a port
tack approach to the buoy as the wind dropped slightly. Santa Ana attempted
to duck Bribon at the very last second after making a late call to dip
low and try and find a space in the ranks of starboard tack boats. Santa
Ana hit Bribon just forward of the shrouds, cracking Bribon’s topsides.
The impact left a large hole in Santa Ana’s bow and both are out
of the regatta.
As
the afternoon breeze hits the 20's during the 2006 Rolex Big Boat
Series and the tide drops, the line of boats surfing past the
St. Francis Yacht Club, produces rolling wave action, right in front of
the Club house. Unkind Yachting photographers have been known to gather
there to catch the action. San Francisco yachting photographer Chuck Lantz
is one of them. You can see more pixs at: http://www.pbase.com/chucklantz/2006bbsvarious

THE MAN WHO MAPPED THE WORLD?
Standing seven feet tall, Admiral Zheng He the intrepid Ming Dynasty explorer
known as the Three-Jeweled Eunuch, a devout Muslim of Mongolian descent
from Yunnan province towered over his crew on his legendary treasure ship.
Zheng He's journeys took him to 37 countries over 28 years with 300 ships
and 28,000 sailors forms one of the mightiest fleets that ever sailed.
Setting out six centuries ago on the first of seven landmark voyages the
pride of the fleet was Zheng He's 400ft, hardwood, flagship with nine
masts, 12 red sails and 1,000 men onboard. Boat-builders in Nanjing, the
capital of Jiangsu province in eastern China, have just completed a replica
of one of the ships in the fleet, 200ft long and 46 ft wide. The next
step at the Nanjing Treasure Boat Heritage Park is to embark on their
most ambitious project to date - a replica of the treasure ship itself.
Work begins this month and should be completed in 2008, when the replica
boat is expected to sail as an "image envoy" in the aquatic
events in the 2008 Olympic Games. Costing $10m, the boat will be constructed
on an ancient wooden framework made from oak, as historians think the
original probably was. Full article in The Independent: http://news.independent.co.uk/world/asia/article1757280.ece

Sensation Group expands
Asia-Pacific production
New Zealand motor yacht builder the Sensation Group has announced further
expansion into the Asia-Pacific region with a new state-of-the-art production
facility in Singapore, scheduled to open in 2008. Working in conjunction

a complex capable of producing motor yachts from 18m to 40m (59ft-131ft).
Paul Sills, the Groups managing director, said: "This announcement
is the result of two years work. We have been astounded by the level of
support and greatly encouraged by the extent of interest our expansion
has generated in the local Singaporean business community. The future
development of our business is unparalleled given Singapore's unique location
in the market both geographically and strategically." The expansion
into Singapore has been strategically designed to complement Sensation's

Alinghi selects Dubai for winter training
Alinghi, Defender of the 32nd America’s Cup, has chosen Dubai to
continue the two boat training and testing program for three months over
the winter. After looking worldwide, the weather team found that the meteorological
conditions in Dubai most resemble Valencia’s summer conditions,
making the third largest emirate the ideal location to maintain the testing
momentum. The Swiss team plans to relocate 60 members of the 132-strong
team to Dubai, including 34 sailors (the full squad), designers, boat
builders and engineers. The two 25m America’s Cup Class racing yachts
will be transported in early November and the team will sail from late

It's Bond - Alan Bond
Australia II’s magnificent America’s Cup win in 1983 was not
only a victory that ended the longest winning streak in the history of
sport, but coupled with Alan Bond's dogged determination led to the event
that stopped the nation. After backing Ben Lexcen’s radical, winged-keel
design, Alan Bond went on to become one of Australia’s richest entrepreneurs
including being named Australian of the Year. Then came the bust, after
all the glory, Bond found himself jailed for corporate fraud. For the
first and only time Alan Bond has given his version of events in a book
written by international best selling Australian author Rob Mundle. Titled
BOND, he details his entire life, from his early childhood in England
to coming to Australia with his family as an 11-year-old, building his
corporate empire and winning the America’s Cup. The man who is responsible
for the creation of the national icon, the Boxing Kangaroo, answers his
critics and deals with the myths and rumours that grew around him plus
tells of the powerful outside influences that worked to bring him down.
He goes on to tell of how, after three horrendous years in prison, he
is now rebuilding his family and corporate life. BOND is now out of print
but Rob Mundle has recently secured a few remaining copies and they can
now be purchased (signed by Rob Mundle) for $AUD45.00 each (including
packaging and postage within Australia - more overseas) by contacting

A real Nome away from home
Time finally ran out for Alpha Global Expedition. The Arctic ice retreated
early this year and has now returned early. This means that Barrabas will
be stored safely ashore in Nome, Alaska until next summer when Adrian
will return and attempt to complete his vertical circumnavigation. Paperwork
delays have proved to be a blessing in disguise and although Russian permissions
have been confirmed had Adrian left Nome on schedule after completing
repairs he could have been trapped in ice as it is already reforming at
two critical points on his route along the Russian Northern coastline.

Single handed Velux 5 Oceans
starts Oct 22
The Velux 5 Oceans was established as the first single-handed around the
world race in 1982 and is run every four years. The 30,000-mile three-leg
race begins on October 22 and covers 3 grueling legs from Bilbao (Spain)
to Fremantle (Australia) to Norfolk (USA), and then back to Bilbao approximately
six months later. Along the way the eight skippers may face huge storms,
waves of up to 25 metres, sleep deprivation and extreme isolation. Fewer
people have achieved this goal than have climbed Mount Everest. Britain's
most famous mariner, ancient or modern, Sir Robin Knox - Johnston at the
age of 67 will be at the helm of Saga Insurance, roughly 38 years
after his last historic solo voyage. -- Follow the race from: http://www.velux5oceans.com

VOR 2.0 - HANDBRAKE OFF
Anyone who has experienced at first hand the sheer speed of the Volvo
Open 70 will be delighted to learn that the official Rule for 2008-09
has been framed to safeguard the status of the world's fastest ocean going
monohull. Rather than apply the 'hand brake' to the VO70's stunning performance,
the rule focuses on durability measures which carry no speed penalty to
produce 'fast, single mast, monohull keelboats of similar performance,
suitable for long distance racing offshore at the highest level of the
sport'. Weight distribution, restrictions on appendages and the integrity
of construction materials in keel mechanisms are the main elements of
version 2 of the Volvo Open 70 rule - upgraded from the 2005-06 race.
The race organisers and Rule Management Group (RMG), led by chief measurer
James Dadd, have concentrated on the issues which contributed to structural
problems in the previous race - particularly in the area of canting keels.
