EDITORIAL
After a whistle stop
tour of Singapore and crisscrossing Malaysia to visit some old seafaring
friends on Pulau Rawa and the new Maur Marina, then covering the Borneo
Int Yachting Regatta we have come to the realization that
AsianYachting
is growing in popularity and going from strength to strength as every
AY
News release generates more interest and feedback than
the one before. We take our role as the region's premier Yachting
News website very seriously
and find it extremely rewarding to see the events, boat shows and regattas
that we help to promote, thriving and prospering.
After
receiving a mixture of complaints and praises from competitors and regatta
organisers we have decided to launch over the coming weeks for subscribers
only, a forum like bulletin board for competitors to post their remarks
or air their grievances and give organisers the opportunity to view them
and reply if they feel it warrants it. Anyone interested in sponsoring
the associated costs involved with running the forum are asked to email
Hasslan the AY
webmaster for information on seeing their company or brand
name up in lights on the top of the page. We hope this move will not only
improve communication between both parties but also have the added benefit
of producing bigger and better events for all to enjoy.
Over
the last month the Olympic trail event in Qingdao, the World Mens 470
championship in Rizhao, China, the Western
Circuit in Singapore and the Borneo
Int Yachting Regatta in East Malaysia have taken place in
Asian waters. Proving yet again that yachting is fast becoming a business
in Asia and one that has fueled the growth of major tourist economies
around the world. South East Asia, with its unique combination of almost
perfect all-year round weather, pristine waters and ideal sailing conditions
is experiencing a building boom on land and beginning to see an explosion
in marine development as more people are looking at working or retiring
in the region and enjoy a more relaxed and peaceful way of life, both
on and off the water. Please carry on reading through the newsletter where
a variety of home building, charter yacht, boat building and equipment
suppliers are available to fill all your needs and at the same time support
our worthy and well-respected advertisers.
Happy sailing
Capt Marty.

"Unluckiest sailors of the month"
It all started at
the Seafair Summer Festival which saw over 100
boaters arrested and charged with Boating Under the Influence
by more than 50 local law enforcement, US Customs and US Coast Guard personnel
during an unlimited hydroplane race. Officials had warned the boating
community that they would be enforcing BUI laws this year. There were
49 BUI arrests during last year's Seafair and just 12 in 2004. "We
don't believe that it's more intoxicated boaters on the water but the
combined efforts of law enforcement," said State Patrol Lt Jeffrey
Sass. A number of states and provinces around North America are enforcing
tighter boating while intoxicated laws and Ontario recently passed a law
saying that boaters could have their driver's licenses suspended for boating
under the influence for up to a year.
Then
three maxi’s clashed on the start line of the final race in the
2006 Hahn Premium Race Week. It was a day Mark Richards,
skipper of Bob Oatley’s Wild Oats probably
wished he had stayed in bed. The tide was still running hard down the
passage when the boats went into sequence. Inexplicably Wild Oats
was caught on the wrong side of the start line without boat speed and
the other boats coming towards the pin on starboard. Mark Richards decided
the only way back was between Steven David’s Wild Joe and
Stephen Ainsworth’s Loki. ‘We were just in the wrong
place at the wrong time’ said Mark Richards. ‘We could have
snuck through but the tide was pushing down the passage and Loki
had to luff up to stay inside the mark and the gap closed'. The crash
of the two rigs echoed across the passage, then the sound of shredding
Kevlar as Loki’s spreaders tore a longitudinal tear in
Wild Oats mainsail. Loki's bowman was fast up the rig checking
for spreader damage while back behind the line, the headsail came down
on Wild Oats, then the main as she was an instant retirement.

PIMEX 2006 kicks off with
BANGKOK preview show
Now in its 4th year, Phuket International Marine Expo (PIMEX) takes a
preview show to Bangkok. From September 21 – 23, organisers Image
Asia Events will stage Bangkok’s first ever boatshow with 10 boats
in the forecourt of the prestigious All Seasons Place in full view of
busy Wireless Road and exhibition booths in Conrad Hotel's ballroom immediately
adjacent to the boat displays in the city’s main business district.
“PIMEX 2006 Preview is about reaching out to the Bangkok market
on its doorstep, giving visitors the opportunity to see what it’s
all about without the need initially to make the trip to Phuket. Exhibitors
get the opportunity to invite interested buyers to the main in event in
Phuket in December to see a wider range of boats, in the marina environment

Hydroptere sets sights on world records
The Hydroptere team announced the launch of a program to develop a new
generation of sailboats capable of flying on the water. They now have
new sponsors, plus the backing of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale
de Lausanne, whose expertise helped bring the America’s Cup back
to Europe.
The
Hydroptere concept is amazing. With the wind blowing at only a few knots,
the trimaran lifts up, just grazing the surface of the water with the
tips of its wings. As this greatly reduces the friction from the water
and waves, it seems to be flying on the water. Previous versions of the
Hydroptere not only demonstrated the feasibility of this incredible concept,
but one even beat a record, crossing the English Channel from Dover to
Calais at an average speed of more than 33 knots. With this new impetus,
the Hydroptere is one step closer to making the dream of flying on the
water a reality and reaching fantastic speeds simply through the force
of the wind. Keep up to speed at: http://www.hydroptere.com/index.php4?lang=EN

World Speed Records
5.1
The World
Sailing Speed Record Council (WSSRC) have ratified the solo
24 hour distance record of 610.45 nm, averaging 25.76 knots set by Yvan
BOURGNON (SUI) on Brossard from 6-7 August. The previous distance
record sailing single-handed in 24 hours was held by Yves PARLIER Médiatis
Région Aquitaine.
5.2
Sodebo rules the waves
Thomas Coville on Sodebo single-handedly beat the Round Britain
Record by 26 hours. The WSSRC have ratified the solo Around Britain and
Ireland record of 6 d, 6 hrs, 40 mins and 31 secs set by Thomas COVILLE
(FRA) onboard the trimaran Sodebo. The skipper takes his 4th
solo record in 13 months and qualifies for the Route du Rhum. Setting
out from South of the Isle of Wight, Thomas took 6 days (8-14 August)
to complete the 1787 miles around England, Ireland and Scotland, reaching
as far North as the Shetland Islands at an average speed of 11.86 knots.
In
so doing he breaks Jean-Luc Van Den Heede's record of 7 d, 8 h and 47
m along the same course in May 2005, aboard his 25 m aluminum monohull
Adrien. Sodebo improved on the original record by 1
day, 2 hours and 7 minutes. Since July 2005, this is Thomas' 4th solo
record at the helm of Sodebo, after the Route of Discovery, the
Miami - New York and the Channel Crossing. More at: http://www.sodebo-voile.com
5.3 Maximus to the fore...
The World Sailing Speed Sailing Council has has also ratified the world
record set by the 98-foot Maximus for Around the Isle of Wight
- Rule 21c (powered sail systems) Monohull. The new elapsed record is:
3 hrs 20 mins 9 secs for an average speed of 15.01 knots. The previous
record was held by Mike Slade's Leopard - 4h 8m 55s, set in Jun
2001
5.4
One World
The WSSRC have ratified the solo Transpacific west to east 20 foot Sport
Single handed record that will likely stand for quite a while. Alessandro
DI BENEDETTO (ITA) on One World. DI BENEDETTO completed the Transpacific
crossing in 62 d, 17 hrs, 51 mins and 55 secs. It's hard to imagine that
there are many hearty adventurers thinking of challenging the new 4,482
nm Yokohama, Japan to San Francisco USA record in the "20-foot Sport
-Singlehanded' category. Yachts in this category must be a maximum 20
ft overall and have no inside accommodations. Alessandro Di Benedetto
(ITA) established the 'initial record in this category for his recent

Round the World Powerboat Record?
Kiwi Pete Bethune's Earthrace powerboat has crossed the Pacific and arrived
in North America. The biodiesel-powered trimaran is currently on a world
tour. If Bethune succeeds, he will go down in the record books as the
fastest person to circle the world, and the only one to attempt the feat
in a biodiesel-fueled boat.
The
current record is held by British boat Cable & Wireless, which made
the circumnavigation in 75 days back in 1998. Earthrace will now journey
down the west coast of the US, Mexico and Central America, before going
through the Panama Canal, up the east coast of the States and across the
Atlantic for a port tour of Europe and the Middle East. Meanwhile more
on this extraordinary wave piercing boat and Bethune's progress can be
tracked via his website: http://www.earthrace.net/view.asp
