EDITORIAL
Well
the 2006-07 AsianYachting
Season
sure got off to a great start with the windy Evason
Phuket
Raceweek living up to its reputation of providing
close and exciting racing. Meanwhile Singapore saw a bumper turnout at
the RSYC
Regatta held over two weekends in July. But the biggest event
was when over ninety yachts set sail from Darwin, Northern Australia on
the Sail
Indonesia Rally.
Organisers have gradually been climbing back up to mid-nineties numbers.
Most are foreign yachts from all over the world, so it is imperative that
they have a safe and entertaining trip as word by mouth advertising from
these sailors is one of the best promotions SE Asia cruising destinations
can have. Gala celebrations in Darwin and Kupang plus extensive cultural
visits to neighboring islands and villages off the beaten tourist path
have been planned throughout Indonesia and can be viewed at http://www.sailindonesia.net/rally/schedule.php
August
sees the Classic Boat Regatta
(Aug 9th) and the Western Circuit Sailing
Regatta over three weekends (Aug 13, 20, 26) held at Raffles
Marina on the western approaches to Singapore. For the first time the
keelboat fleet will be joined by an ever expanding Formula 16 multihull
class in fierce but friendly competition.
The
on again, off again Borneo International
Yachting
Challenge sails into early September (3rd - 9th) and
has attracted over twenty yachts visiting the region for the third running
of the event. With the recent growth of events it is encouraging to see
that together with our promotional efforts the organisers are being rewarded
with increased entries and as word gets out more visiting yachts are finding
Asian waters the destination of choice.
Further info on the
above events and much much more regional sailing news can be found in

DISASTER
IN MARBLEHEAD
Shortly after racing on July 11 during the 2006 Flying Scot
North American Championship Regatta, at the Corinthian Yacht Club
in Marblehead, MA, a micro-burst tornado devastated the Flying Scot fleet
and many of the Yacht Clubs' boats and docks. Docked boats were flipped
8-10 feet in the air, with at least 30 of the 63 competing boats turtled,
with damage to many more. Fortunately, all Scot sailors and Corinthian
YC people were injury free. It will be at least two weeks before the yacht
club facilities will be available to use again, so as a result, the Flying
Scot North American Championship have been cancelled.
ACC ACT 12 heats up
and more to come next year...
Emirates Team New Zealand won a 'winner take all' match over Alinghi on
the waters off Valencia to win Louis Vuitton Act 12 and claim the 2006
ACC Season Championship. BMW ORACLE Racing and Luna
Rossa's fight for third got a little too intense. Coming in on
port tack Dickson saw the Italians roll into a tack right in front of
him. The resultant collision halfway up the first leg as the ITA 86 stern
swung out making contact with the BMW Oracle bow tearing the bowsprit
off, while Luna Rossa showed significant damage on the port side and retired
from the race. The Umpires penalised Luna Rossa for tacking too close
and to make matters worse the Jury latter ruled that Luna Rossa must pay
its own costs, as well as 80 percent of the repair bill on the American
boat. More AC News at: http://www.americascup.com
The Luck of the Irish
Against all odds, Géry Trentesaux's France Bleu came from behind
to win the Rolex Commodores' Cup 2006, beating twelve other national teams
in the process, including three powerful ones from Ireland. The Irish,
led by Ireland Green, had been on top since the beginning
of the week and come the start of the final double pointscoring offshore
race appeared to have the event all but sewn up. But ultimately, and despite
on this occasion fielding three teams, Ireland was piped at the post for
the second consecutive time in a row. http://rorc.org/comcup/

Elaine Chua off again on LES
SABLES -THE AZORES race
The start for this first edition of the race Les Sables -The Azores was
on time and amongst the 69 solo sailors (62 men and 7 women) includes
Singapore sailor Elaine Chua in her Mini 6.5 Pearl Energy Feng.
The 2,600 nautical-mile race starts from Les Sables d’Olonne, France
to Azores, Portugal and back. The voyage would not be easy as the skippers
would first have to pass the infamous Bay of Biscay, then Cape Finisterre,
cross the cargo ships routes before landing in the nine-island archipelago
of the Azores in the middle of the Azores high pressure system. From the
start they benefited from a little south-West breeze of 8-12 knots and
a long swell which was expected to strengthen to 20-25 knots or even more.

TMA officially formed and moving forward...
At the end of a long – and often difficult– road, a loose
group that started out as an informal collection of people involved in,
or associated with, the marine industry in Thailand have finally become
a legally registered association to be called the Thai Marine Business
Association (TMA). A number of people have put significant effort into
getting them to where they are now – a legal body that can lobby
government for its support in developing the marine tourism/leisure industry
and everything that goes with it. The MAT/TMBA achievements to date include:
Definition in The Thai Vessel Act of the concept of ‘Pleasure Boat’
for commercial use (ie charter activity) and exemption from Thai captain
requirement. Production of Marine Tourism brochure by TAT for international
distribution (now is third print run) ‘Work in progress’/under
consideration: Relax 70% shareholding requirement for ownership of commercially
operated boats. Allocate significant govt marketing budget and co-ordinate
across the whole industry.

Singapore sailors to the fore...
Young Singapore sailors have put on terrific performances to seize yet
another World Championship to indicate that they are one of the top nations
in youth sailing right now. Colin Cheng, 16, and Victoria Chan, 15, emerged
as the new Laser 4.7 World Champions. Nicholas Paul De Cruz, 16, and Elizabeth
Yin Yueling, 14, won both the Men and Women’s divisions in the 2006
Arch Byte CII World Championships held in Bermuda. Then Sean Lee Teik
Ren, 15, dominated 189 competitors from 22 countries at the 2006 Optimist
North American Championships in Ponce, Puerto Rico from the start and
finished the regatta with an almost flawless performance, scoring eight
firsts out of 12 races. 'Our sailors’ recent performances in the
international arena have been very encouraging to capture five World Championships
titles (boys & girls) in the span of a little over one week to prove
young home-grown Singapore sailors are amongst the world’s best
a good breeding ground for future Olympians". They also look certain
to increase the medal haul at the IODA Asian Sailing Championship presently
being held in Taiwan. More at: http://www.sailing.org.sg/

Enterprising Sri Lankan sailors
Following the Enterprise World Championships in Sri Lanka this year, UK
and Irish Enterprise sailors have launched a campaign to send a container
full of Lasers or Laser parts, to young sailors in Sri Lanka. UK marine
PR company ADPR is therefore looking for donations of complete Lasers
or laser hulls and will accept anything in the form of spare gear. 'There
must be a large number of old and unwanted Lasers or parts currently around
the UK in garages, sheds and boat parks,' reads an ADPR press release.
'This is a good opportunity to 'recycle' them, clear some space at home
or at the sailing club and at the same time help an emerging, less advantaged
nation to get some of their youth involved in this wonderful, ever growing
sport.' Cash donations will also be accepted, although the main focus
is on donations of complete or incomplete Lasers or just spare parts.
If you can help the Sri Lanka appeal, contact Alice Driscoll at ADPR on

3.18 Pirates attack vessels in Indonesian waters
Jakarta July 06 - Pirates have attacked two UN-chartered vessels and a
Japanese bulk carrier, in Indonesian waters around the Malacca Straits.
Two attacks occurred on ships carrying relief to tsunami-stricken Aceh
province and a Japanese bulk carrier, said Noel Choong, head of the piracy
reporting centre of the International Maritime Bureau in Kuala Lumpur.
In at least one of the attacks, raiders were armed with AK-47 rifles,
grenades and pistols. "That area has been a piracy hotspot in the
past, so we hope it is not the start of a new series of attacks,"
Choong said. Jodi Heryadi, a spokesperson for Aceh police, said in one
of the attacks the pirates, who were in fishing boats, took the crew's
wallets, cellphones, shoes and clothes. The Japanese vessel was attacked
but its crew fended off the attackers with fire hoses. The attacks took
to six the total number of piracy incidents in the Malacca Strait this
year - Many round the world cruising sailors have expressed concerns and
becoming apprehensive about transiting the Malacca Straits, the locals
say there is no danger to leisure craft so Rob Kothe from Sailworld
Australia has compiled a number of comments that should put sailors minds
at rest. Go

World Speed Records

WORLD RECORDS are a tumbling down..
752 miles in just 24 hours -- was the headline to the incredible first
day Bruno Peyron had on the maxi catamaran Orange II as he and his crew
set off to break Steve Fossett's transatlantic record. On the second day
a whooping 766 miles was recorded which comes with a mind-blowing average
speed of 32 knots or 60nm more than the previous record also held by Orange
II and 14 more than the new historic time set the previous morning. By
smashing the record twice in one day, you certainly cannot say that Bruno
Peyron’s crew got off to a bad start. "766 miles, that’s
a nice number, isn’t it?" smiled the ‘Boss’ during
his radio session. Bruno Peyron and his eleven crew aboard Orange II went
on to set a new Transatlantic record for the 2925nm passage from New York
to The Lizard of 4 days, 8 hours, 23 minutes and 54 seconds at an average
speed of 28 knots via the theoretical route. Event website and photos:

BEECOM'S new HONOLULU - YOKOHAMA RECORD
On Monday, 24 July 2006 the 72ft Japanese sailing yacht, Beecom

Joshima Lighthouse finishing line in her challenge from Honolulu-Yokohama
to set a new WSSRC crewed monohull special category Transpac record. Her
elapsed time of 13d 3h 36m 18s for the 3750 nm at an average speed of
11.88kts was submitted by WSSRC timekeeper, Ken Hayashi. The existing
passage record from Honolulu to Yokohama of 13d 20h 9m 22s was set in
1995 aboard Lakota, a crewed catamaran owned by Steve Fossett. This is
the initial record by a monohull on this route so Fossett's record still
stands. More at: http://www.teambeecom.jp
