2006-07 AsianYachting Calendar out NOW!
Most regatta organisations are wisely using the break between seasons to assess their events performance and instigate changes to improve the events status for the coming season. Over 100 yachts will be departing from Darwin in Northern Australia when Sail Indonesia gets underway on July 22nd. An extensive program of events has come together through Indonesia (see Rally Schedule) for the cruisers to enjoy over the next four months. When the yachts reach Singapore, SailAsia will be taking over from Raffles Marina for the passage up the Malacca Straits ending up in duty free Langkawi. Over the years variations of this event has progressively introduced South East Asian waters to thousands of cruising sailors and is one of our biggest assets to turning the ASEAN region into a world class cruising destination.

Phuket Race Week kick starts the 2006/07 Regatta Season and for crews convenience the Quantum Naga Cup for the homegrown One-Design Phuket Sports 8 boats has been incorporated into the 4 day program. Once again hosted by the Evason Phuket Resort and Spa and held off Phuket's breezy east coast the event sails straight into the SW monsoon month of July.

Other significant changes to the 2006/07 Calendar include the earlier postponed 3rd Borneo International Yachting Challenge is now to take place from Sept 4th - 9th starting in Labuan and finishing up at Miri Marina in Sarawak. Check it out at: www.borneorace.com

The Andaman Sea Rally (Jan 13th to 27th) is back after the 2005 & 06 events were cancelled due to the islands recovering from the Asian Tsunami on Dec 2004. This event is for both power and sailing yachts between Phuket, Thailand to Port Blair in India's, Andaman Islands where participants enjoy a traditional welcome and a great social atmosphere.

Also the President's Cup in the Philippines next year will be held at Boracay shortly after the Boracay Race. Organisers felt that by moving the event around to other exotic locations it would attract more foreign participants, sponsors and highlight some of the great sailing destinations they have to offer.

All in all there is allot of sailing to come so we strongly recommend anyone intending to visit the region to coincide it with a regatta or sailing event by taking a good look at: http://asianyachting.com/asiancalendar.htm and browse individual event website's before making any plans. We guarantee that you won't be disappointed with the high standards of racing and social activities each event has strived to achieve.
Happy sailing
Capt Marty

2 "Unluckiest sailors of the month"

The night before the start of the Koh Samui Regatta at Zico's party David Hill casually mentioned to Race Organiser Peter Plant that he would like to look at insuring his Formula 28 before racing starts the next day. Although leaving it a little late in proceedings perhaps some insight into what could happen was playing through his mind. Race one got away in relatively moderate conditions but as they approached the distant rounding mark a building storm saw the breeze increase to 30 + knots. With the extra loading bearing down on Siamese Cat's center beam crumpled and a subsequent dismasting resulted on the Formula 28. Skipper Kim Thomas's added afterwards "That the back beam structure then collapsed in the building seaway to become the biggest casualty of the day." Although the wreck was anchored off for the night the rescue attempt the following day found a mangled mess of hulls, beams, mast and rigging that was towed ashore and highly unlikely that she can be revived or ever sailed again. So you may ask what is the moral of this story? Check out MUI Yachtinsure...

Honolulu, Hawaii -- An out-of-control powerboat plowed into a 70-foot catamaran at the Ala Wai Boat Harbor, knocking Arizona resident Bill Browning out of bed. Browning went on deck of Double Barrel, where he saw the 76-foot Prowler reverse into other boats, piers and his $1.5 million boat, five more times. Neal Timon, 65, was arrested after a police officer and an engineer from another boat jumped aboard. Timon was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant and fleeing from the scene of an accident. -- http://starbulletin.com/2006/06/15/news/story08.html

3.12 Pirate worries for World Rally...
World ARC, a new rally run by the organisers of the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers, is to avoid the Red Sea and Horn of Africa because of security fears and political unrest. In April this year a US-registered yacht issued a distress call from Yemen after spotting vessels with armed guards, just a month after two other US-flagged yachts were fired at by pirates but managed to escape unharmed. The circumnavigation for cruisers starts in the Caribbean in Jan 2008, and is open to monohulls with a minimum LOA of 38ft (11.6m), and multihulls between 38ft (11.6m) and 60ft (18.3m). - Full details on World ARC at: http://www.worldcruising.com/worldarc/

4.6 Fly the unique Maltese Falcon way...
Lectronic Latitude published a special mini-edition to celebrate the successful sailing trials of Tom Perkins astonishing 287-ft three-masted modern clipper Maltese Falcon off the coast of Turkey. The 1300-tonne yacht sets 15 square sails on three free standing rotating carbon fibre masts, has reached speeds in excess of 10 knots in 8 - 16 knots true wind speed.

It took a lot of money to have the boat built but it took just as much courage, faith and technological innovations to put a unique and untested three-masted rig on a boat that took seven years to complete. Built at the Perini Navi facility near Istanbul, designed by Gerry Dijkstra and styled by UK based Ken Freivokh the Maltese Falcon has written a new page in the history of yachting with sail technology developed by the Germans 45 years ago called the Dynarig is no longer an experimental concept. 15 squaresails stow inside the masts and are then drawn to the ends of the 18 yards by 75 electrically operated winches set in the rig. The sails are trimmed to the correct angle by rotating the masts and yards as one using a complex mechanism at the foot of each mast. All the sails have been successfully unfurled and furled from the automated control 'station' on the bridge of the yacht and the latest reports are that both the owner and the designer are delighted with the results.
