2. "Unluckiest sailors of the month"

Allot of discussions have taken place on the suitability of the current crop of Volvo 70 designs competing on this years Volvo Ocean Race. The four Farr designed yachts Ericsson, Movistar, Brasil 1 and Pirates of the Caribbean have all experienced repeated keel ram failures, structural problems with their canting keels and have had to retire from one leg of the race.

The two Juan Kouymoumdjian designed ABN yachts and ING Real Estate Brunel designed by Don Jones have completed both legs although not without some difficulties onroute. To make matters worse Brasil 1 also suffered a broken mast in middle of the Indian Ocean and is presently being trucked to Melbourne after motoring its way to Perth.

Several boats will replace titanium hydraulic keel rams with heavier but more reliable stainless steel structures and extra carbon fibre support will be added to strengthen the area around the top of the keel. The total weight gain in the hull as a result of this work will be no more than 150kg, the equivalent of which will then have to be removed from the keel bulb.

The biggest worry for organisors is that a massive structural failure on a yacht thousands of miles from land may not be just bad news for the health of the race, it could threaten the lives of the sailors.

For as long as AY has known, this race has consistently been at the fore front of yacht design and new racing innovations eventually filter down to club racing levels. Never the less Seb Josse's young, talented and exuberant crew aboard ABN Amro Two have set a new world 24-hour record of 563 miles. All we can add to the nay sayers is "If Captain Cook was not allowed to go to sea in his leaky old tub with scurvy crew, we probably would not even be discovered yet!" Event website: http://www.volvooceanrace.org/

On the Asian scene for Robert Knight's DK46 Drumstick it was a case of the vessels draft exceeding the depth of water (Drumstuck) during Race 3 of the Singapore Straits Regatta. They remained stuck on the Indonesian reef and watched most the fleet sail by before being hauled off by the committee boat and retiring from the race. This may have put their overall chances of winning the regatta in jeopardy and shaken their confidence despite winning two races in the series. See photos

3. Austral - Asian News

3.1 Singapore - Horsburgh Challenge (4 – 5 Feb)
The Horsburgh Challenge is the SAF Yacht Club’s signature keelboat event that will be held at the height of the blustery north-east monsoon. The first race on 4 Feb will be a 54-nautical mile passage race from the SAF Yacht Club’s Changi Clubhouse to the Horsburgh Lighthouse – situated on the Eastern entrance of the Singapore Straits – and back. The second race on 5 Feb will be a 16-nautical mile race off the East Coast Park, a popular weekend recreational area. There will be two divisions – the IRC and Club Handicap classes. More details at http://www.safyc.org.sg/horsburgh, or email horsburgh@safyc.org.sg

3.6 Sailors beware!
Cruising yachts anchoring of Phuket's west coast are advised to use some heavy ground tackle to secure the vessel, as Kilo a Silkline 510 catamaran that went missing from Phuket recently, has been found in the Nicobar Islands and now the Indian Coast Guard service, who found the 50' catamaran, are asking US$56,000 by way of a 'recapitation' fee. Assuming that the ICG were on patrol when they found Kilo, rather than actively searching for it, it sounds like a very hefty finder's fee.

3.7 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race - Race 6 Singapore to Qingdao (China)
After a spectacular stopover in Singapore the ten yachts headed out on 27th Jan for the fascinating Race 6 - 2,720 nm route north towards Qingdao (China), expecting to arrive in the host venue for the 2008 Olympic sailing on 13th Feb. Dominating this race will be some tactically challenging coastal racing in the South China Sea. During this leg the crews will pass the halfway distance (18,440 Nautical miles to Race Finish) of the Clipper Round the World race. Half conquered, half to go… Follow their progress at: http://www.clipper-ventures.co.uk/2006

3.10 China Cup cancelled
Due to the insufficient number of entries, the China Cup -- originally conceived as an international ocean race for Open 60s from London to Shanghai -- has been postponed. Earlier, race organizers Mike Golding's Extreme Sailing Ltd revised the format of the event to make it easier for a greater number of teams to participate. The modified event was to be a shortened version of the race in China, from Hong Kong to Qingdao with a finish in Shanghai. Despite these actions, only four teams were registered at the deadline date. Oh well, we will have to wait a while longer to see the IMOCA Open 60's in Asia!

3.11 Quantum's FusionM just keeps getting faster!
Ray Roberts Quantum Racing Team win at the King's Cup in Thailand, Rolex Challenge in Australia and Skandia Geelong Week are a sure sign that Quantum's FusionM sails are gaining a big foothold in the professional and grand-prix sailing circuits around the world.
Sailors in Asia should take advantage of having one of the world's leading edge sailmaking factories in their own backyard. The knowledge gained at these racing events is applied directly to the sails they make. So now, more than ever, you can count on FusionM delivering great boat-speed and reliability.
