The
prodigal son returns home
After 10 years or what seems like starting
a second life in Asia the prodigal son has returned to Australia to visit
his dear mother during her 80th year who now lives in Mooloolaba on Queensland's
Sunshine Coast. Coinciding the visit with the much awaited showdown in
the hotly contested ACE Etchells World Championship
the roving reporter inside can't stop himself from sending the news and
covering this top class event as it happens in Austral-Asian waters. Goto

Race Reports here...
After
receiving a stream of complaints about not covering the Phuket 8's Quantum
Naga Cup
adequately the full report with photos has been posted of this exciting
event at: http://asianyachting.com/news/QNagaCup.htm
If you have broadband short video clips of racing in 25 knots can be viewed
at: http://duncanson-yachts.com/P8-Offwind-1.wmv
During July, the Republic
of Singapore YC held their annual RSYC
Regatta and the full reports with Shu Fen's great photos
can be browsed from: http://www.rsycregatta.org
The
Royal Selangor YC in Malaysia also rescheduled their already hectic racing
calendar and invited the public to experience sailing during a Anything
that Floats weekend that proved highly successful as the
accompanying photos show, and yes, the usual muddy water colour has even
a tinge of blue and the photos have not been altered.
Being
taken to task over a few past editorials we once again reiterate that
we stand by all our articles and welcome any feed back or comments. The
part time critique as events unfold has stirred up discussion behind the
scenes and hopefully regatta organizers can take a look at the problems
they faced and go on to rectify them before the next years event comes
around. Good race management with quick decision making and ease of maneuvering
the start and mark laying boats during the inaugural Phuket
Race Week saw only one academic protest lodged and shows
just how easy it can be. See Race
Reports... Making it more enjoyable for everyone concerned.
Cheers for now where ever you are.

"Unluckiest sailor of the month"
After
a virulent argument between Dr Bobby Golding
and the very polite Evason Resort staff about who is paying for the lobster
dinner he just consumed was settled by the unflappable Boo late on the
first night of Phuket Race Week would have normally been enough to get
banned from any event. But
the well known Irish radiologist that operates out of Bangkok was apparently
the first entry for the event and had his yacht specially transported
down to compete went on to become the biggest loser of the series.
Skippering his yacht
Forest he ran into
the start boat during the pre-start maneuvers on race 2, then was called
over the line early at the start and did not respond to the recall to
be disqualified from the race plus have the only protest of the series
lodged against him. To cap it all off one the crew mutinied during the
race and the rest afterwards leaving him no option other than to pay for
the damage and retire from the regatta.

3.1 Optimist
Worlds
Salinas, Ecuador - Without needing to sail the final race 13 year-old
Wei Ni from Shanghai in
China is the 2004 Optimist world champion. His results are remarkable
- apart from one race, he was never out of the top ten. Wei weighs 40kg
and measures 1.55m. He used, like maybe 30% of the fleet, a Toni Tio sail
from Spain and the standard McLaughlin foils supplied with the charter
boat. Young sailors from fourteen countries and five continents shared
the top 20 places. More at: http://www.salinasyachtclub.org/optiworlds/index.htm

FusionM gets with
the strength!
The Quantum
Sails Design Group have introduced a brand-new membrane
sail called FusionM. A topographical
map of fibres radiating in all directions reflect a more realistic picture
off the changing loads as they are constantly transferred and distributed
through the sail. This new design does not distort sail shape in highly
loaded areas and has an exceptional weight for strength ratio that hi-tech
racers are looking for. Assembled at a new facility in Malaysia that utilizes
heat and pressure lamination in controlled conditions that characterize
true aerospace techniques. Place your order at: http://www.quantumsails.com

New US west coast to Hawaii record
Robert Miller's 140-foot Mari Cha IV took 32 hours off of West Marine
Pacific Cup course record and Doug Baker's Magnitude 80 finished shortly
after 6pm to also eclipse the former record held by Roy Disney's Pyewacket.
After starting on Friday July 2nd, the arrival of Mari Cha IV to the West
Marine Pacific Cup finish line at Kaneohe Bay on Wednesday at 6:13 pm
has shattered Pyewacket's 1998, 6 day, 14 hour, 22 minute record. Mari
Cha IV has joined Pyewacket, Windward Passage, Merlin, Blackfin, Kathmanu
and others in the record book of transocean legends. http://www.pacificcup.org/

Warning to all offshore racers.
DK Yachts are warning all offshore racers to watch out
when one of their Malaysian built Mum 30, Farr 40, 52, 520 or Mark Mills
DK46 lines up on your starting grid. Ones to look out for are Aussie's
Matt Allen’s Farr 52OD Ichi Ban while 2 worlds away Richard
Perini's Foreign Affair is lining up for the Mum 30 worlds. Sailors
in the UK have not been spared as Fidessa Fastwave a DK46, sailed
by Chris Brown won the Rolex Commodores' Cup with the Irish Team and more
is still to come. Serious Yachts

What is Russell Coutts up to?
The event Russell Coutts and Paul Cayard are formulating involves fleet
racing one-design yachts similar in length to the existing America's Cup
yachts, about 24m (80ft). But that's where the similarity will end. The
new boats move into the next generation of performance sailing. It is
proposed that they will be created along the lines of the radical and
extremely fast monohulls that race on Italy's Lake Garda. They are planned
for a crew of only 10 or 12 with a significant number suspended over the
side from trapeze systems to enhance stability. In being identical one-designs,
the cost of entry to this competition will be considerably less than the
$100million-plus required to enter the America's Cup. And with all the
hulls being the same, the racing promises to be close and exciting.

Will Tracy Edwards go the distance?
The finances of round-the-world yachtswoman Tracy Edwards have come under
scrutiny following two separate moves against her personally as well as
two companies associated with her. The impact on Edwards's ambitious plans
to launch two round-the-world events for giant multihulls and monohulls
from Doha in Qatar remains to be seen. One must wonder what ever happened
to the £38 million ($47 million) backing from the Gulf state of
Qatar Edwards unveiled in October last year and how it is to be used during
the non-stop Oryx Cup 2005 and the multi-stage Quest in 2006. The £540,000
($1million) first prize for the Oryx Cup was said to be the richest in
sailing. Full story: http://tinyurl.com/6jdl5

5.1 Pittwater
to Lord Howe Island record
July 24 - Martyn Riley's 56ft catamaran Raw Nerve with 6 crew slashed

After only 1d 3h 45m 46s and averaging 14.69 kts Riley said 'We are drenched,
tired and ecstatic; it was a very rough and wet crossing'. The record
was previously held by Ian Treleaven's monohull, Merit, a Volvo Ocean

record and 'Monohull vessel, any number of crew' category record for the
