1. EDITORIAL

Dear Subscribers
Here at AsianYachting we have taken appropriate measures to be removed from the global spammers lists. The personal info we have on our database indicates that you want to receive the popular AsianYachting News and Views that we have been sending out on a monthly basis for the last 4 years. There is a possibility that AOL and Compuserve

If your name does not appear at the top left side with the welcome we ask these subscribers to advise their Service Providers as receiving future email newsletters, it will be necessary to have news@asianyachting.com allowed through your spam blocker. Also as the news is now fully automated please do not reply to the above address, instead update your mailing list and direct all reply's or further correspondence to info@asianyachting.com

Once again a damaging virus is attacking the worlds e-mail service and if you are fortunate enough to receive this newsletter you probably have not been affected yet! Please do not open any mail from any sources with Test, Hi or Hello in the subject line and immediately delete any mail without messages or attachments in a binary file along with all the nuisance Viagra, E-bay, Penis enlarging cream and Nigerian scams that Bill Gates has promised to eradicate by 2006. Personally I can't wait for this to happen as presently they are making a mockery out of serious Internet based media businesses.

As always, we assure you that your email and other contact information remains confidential and is used only by AsianYachting. We do not share, trade or sell our data base of names! We only use the circulation list to inform subscribers of the news and race reports as education material that is especially designed to make sailing in Asia more informative and fun.
Happy sailing

2. "Unluckiest sailor of the month"

As Sydney turned out for the biggest on-the-water Australia Day celebration since the 1988 bicentenary, it was not a happy day for the owner and crew of the well known ocean racing maxi yacht, Nicorette. The green-hulled 80-footer, owned and skipper by Ludde Ingvall, broke her mast less than half an hour into the 168th Australia Day Regatta short ocean race from Sydney Harbour to Botany Bay and return.

She was leading the 50-boat fleet about 1.5 nautical miles south of the Heads, beating to windward into a 12-15 knot southerly breeze when the rigging gave way, the towering mast crashing over the side, broken in two places. No-one was injured, with Nicorette returning to port under motor, leaving George Snow’s 79-footer Brindabella to take line honours from the Volvo 60, Andrew Short Marine (Andrew Short) and Infinity III (Martin James).

It has been a somewhat luckless summer for Nicorette who won the Unluckiest Award last month and the first to win it 2 months in succession. Following a major refit, she was forced to withdraw from the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race after damaging her new innovative canting keel system. However, she was repaired in time to take line honours in the Strathfield Pittwater to Coffs Harbour Race in early January, the Australia Day event being her first race since.

4. International News

4.1 Ellen's big Launching
At a build cost of £1 million, B & Q Castorama is one of the world's most expensive "all-terrain vehicles". This is Ellen MacArthur's description of her new trimaran, officially named in Sydney at the launching, in which the sole objective is to attempt to set a string of new solo sailing speed records.

MacArthur will take on the 24-hour record, trans-Atlantic record, round Britain, Shanghai-London (based on the Clipper tall-ships route) with the long-term goal of setting a new non-stop round the world record. The Nigel Irens-designed trimaran, reminiscent of a muscular prop forward, is actually intended to behave quite differently to her appearance: moderate in power, manageable by one person and reasonably forgiving in her nature. "She's powerful, yet graceful," says MacArthur. "She's one of the few boats specifically created to go into the Southern Ocean." Images of the trimaran launch were beamed on to a giant screen at the heart of the Schroders London Boat Show on its opening day. MacArthur shared the honours of officially opening the 50th show via satellite link sponsored by BT Yahoo Broadband. More at: http://www.teamellen.com

4.2 Corinthian Challenge - Production yacht race around the world
One of the most entertaining presentations at Schroders London Boat Show, Chay Blyth announced his plans for Challenge Business Corinthian Challenge. Few opportunities exist for non-professional sailors to race around the world and most are for grand prix designs, requiring grand prix budgets or with the emphasis on the extreme, like the single handed. The Corinthian Challenge offers the opportunity to take a production or semi-production racing yacht, capable of facing the extremes of weather and waves, crewed with experienced amateurs and set off around the globe, pitting oneself against similarly designed yachts and similarly skilled sailors.

If the Global Challenge is Challenge Business' recreation of Blyth's westabout singlehanded non-stop around the world record passage, then the Corinthian Challenge is attempting to recreate the first Whitbread Round the World Race in which Blyth campaigned Great Britain II. Starting in the UK in September 2006, the course will comprise 8 legs, heading south to the Canaries and South Africa, before turning east for Australia, New Zealand, finally heading north to South America, the Caribbean and a final dash home East across the Atlantic. Racing for the pride of winning, the Corinthian Challenge is aimed at racing yachts within a TCC rating band of 1.140 and 1.450, with a minimum length overall of 58ft (17.66m). Yachts will be scored using the internationally accepted IRC handicapping system, ensuring a wide range of existing and new yachts are eligible to compete, using a fair and level rating handicap.

Blyth summed up his concept for the Corinthian Challenge. "What we are trying to do is go back in time and have a race where the fellow who has got a boat can go off and sail around the world and take part in it, as opposed to having to be in one of these hi-tech, very very expensive races. Blyth also expects yacht club teams which charter a boat and the crew paying their own way among the first entries. There will also be sponsored yachts although Blyth expects the money to come from smaller companies with more limited means than one would find in professional races. - The Daily Sail, full story: http://www.thedailysail.com  Event Website: www.corinthianchallenge.com

4.4 Yachtmaster Schools at War!
The business of teaching, testing and awarding Yachtmaster certificates has been the preserve of the RYA for 30 years, but not anymore.. Bullying, market monopoly, trademark wars, legislation - not words often associated with yachting? Well think again. The word Yachtmaster is at the centre of an international dispute that has already been through one court of law. After 30 years of running the yachtmaster qualification, the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) now has some competition. The rival is an American-based International Yachtmaster Training (IYT) school and it won't roll over or go away. The RYA has already had a £206,700 tussle in an American court and, while it succeeded in making the term generic in the USA, it couldn't prevent the IYT from using it there or anywhere else.

Both the IYT and the RYA courses hold equal status in the eyes of the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA), the UK governing body in all matters maritime and in its mind, the word yachtmaster has been used by government agencies since the early 1930s. -- Excerpt from Classic Boat, full story at: http://www.ybw.com/auto/newsdesk/20040022120725cbnews.html

4.5 Skandia sponsors Nick Moloney's Vendée Globe campaign.
Aussie Nick Moloney's 2004 Round the World race campaign was given a huge boost at Skandia Geelong Week as Skandia announced crucial sponsorship which enables Moloney to secure Ellen MacArthur's famous Open 60 (ex-Kingfisher that completed the 2000/2001 Vendée Globe) and prepare the boat for racing. Moloney was the first competitor to register his entry for the 2004 Vendée Globe race and will become the first Australian to ever compete in this non-stop round the world race that starts on 6th November 2004 from Les Sables d'Olonne on the north-west coast of France. http://www.offshorechallenges.com/

5. World Speed Records

5.1 Round the world record attempts
Francis Joyon rounded Cape Horn taking just 49 d, 2 hrs, 21 mins from his start in Brest, France in November. At 0825 UT Friday 23rd Jan. Joyon's 90ft trimaran IDEC made it back into the northern hemisphere and crossed the equator once again at 32° west, after 62 d and 25 mins at sea.

Francis Joyon has established a new solo reference time from Brest, in north-west Brittany to the equator (south-north passage) with a time of 62 d, 25 mins and 6 secs. Added to this achievement is the fact that he has taken just 12 d, 22 hrs and 4 mins between Cape Horn and the equator, which places him ahead of Bruno Peyron's best performance of (13 d 6 hrs and 53 mins). Despite carrying a hole in a hull and being bagged down in the north Atlantic he is poised to shatter the solo non-stop round the world record by an impressive 20% or a little over 70 days. Francis Joyon surfing on Pixsail.com at: www.pixsail.com/fr/idec

The current record set by Michel Desjoyeaux onboard the Open 60 monohull PRB during the 2000 - 2001 Vendée Globe. Joyon is sailing the (90-foot) trimaran IDEC, ex-Sport Elec singlehanded, on which Olivier de Kersauson set a crewed Jules Verne Record in 1997in 71d 14h 22m 08s. Getting anywhere near that time singlehanded would be an astonishing accomplishment for Joyon. Follow to the finish this week at: http://www.trimaran-idec.com

5.2 Jules Verne Record contenders to blast off
Steve Fossett's Cheyenne (ex-Playstation) is ready and Olivier de Kersauson's Geronimo is waiting for the right weather pattern and Bruno Peyron's new Orange 2 will challenge the record in the coming weeks after completing sea trials and further modifications. The Jules Verne Record is 64d 8h 37m 24s set by Bruno on Orange 1 Your can follow their progress at: Cheyenne http://www.fossettchallenge.com  Geronimo http://www.grandsrecords.com and Orange 2 at: http://www.orange.fr

5. 3 The Oryx Cup 2005 and The Quest 2006
Maiden Ocean Racing Qatar have announced that the Quest 2006 will officially start from Doha on 20th December 2006 and features both ocean-going multihull and monohull yachts, over 100 ft and 90 ft respectively. There will be a total of five stop-overs during the Challenge, including locations in the Far East and America (tentatively Kuala Lumpur - Hong Kong - Sydney - Rio de Janeiro - New York) finishing in Cowes to be confirmed latter this year. Prize money for both classes will also be announced in 2004. A feeder race from the Solent will be organised to start in October/November 2006, possibly via the Cape of Good Hope. MORQ has received many bids from potential ports of call and as the route is not finalised yet, expressions of interest should include details of marina facilities, shore side back up, press and hospitality areas together with details of any similar events you have hosted or will be hosting. Suitable locations will be selected for a short list and tender documents will be dispatched in Summer 2004. More on The Oryx Cup 2005 and The Quest 2006 can be found at: http://www.maidenoceanracingqatar.co.uk/
