1. EDITORIAL

As a result of informing our subscribers that the PD World Marina Resort waterfront property and marina was up for tender, a syndicate of sailors, businessmen and land developers was formed and with less than a weeks notice, a tender was lodged for all the vacant land and water lots by the close of tenders on Friday 27th June. Over the next two weeks the successful tenders will be announced and we will attempt keep you updated at: http://asianyachting.com/Mall/PDworldMarina.htm Amongst other things it is expected to turn part of the site into a decent pleasure yacht marine facility with 5 acres of hardstand area, workshops, paint booth, travel lift, chandlery shops, clubhouse and full marina berthing facilities.

This month we will be conducting promotional sails for sponsors and VIP's at the inaugural KFC Putrajaya Regatta (11th-13th July) on a man made lake, right in the middle of Malaysia's often stormy political arena. We will also be covering Six Senses Phuket Raceweek form July 23rd to 27th (See Asian Section) which promises as much action on the water as off the water. The Darwin to Ambon Yacht Race and Sail Indonesia both depart from Darwin, Australia on the 26th July, when a record 140 yachts will make their way through Indonesia for 3 months and expected to turn up in Singapore at the beginning of November to start Sail Malaysia.

With the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games looming up in August we have four advertising spots available on the XXIX Olympiad - AY Race Reports to be generated during the 14-day sailing competition in Qingdao, China. 2. AUSTRAL - ASIAN NEWS

2.1 ACYC to receive a new lease of life...
Ao Chalong Yacht Club in Phuket has obtained a 6 year lease of 1600 sqm of waterfront land in Chalong and is holding an open day on the site at 10 am on Sunday 6th July to raise support for a new clubhouse and all-tide pontoon. All interested persons are welcome to attend. The Phuket Yacht Club at Ao Yon have been invited to join in the venture, and are still considering. If unable to come but interested in either joining the club or buying a life membership debenture should phone Commodore Mick Kealy (+66813960785), Tony Knight (+66817470074) or Susan Usher (+66818955690), or email Harry Usher at harry@ladypie.com Company/individual sponsorship also entertained. Website: http://www.acycphuket.com

2.2 Australia III & IV arrive in Miri, Sarawak
After disappearing off the face of the sailing world and spending nearly 20 years in a remote corner of Japan plus being threatened with becoming landfill both Australia III and Australia IV have finally made their way to Miri in Sarawak. Remote Borneo is the most unlikely place for the boats to end up but when Troy Yaw saw them for sale he could not resist and decided that his Miri Marina would make a good home for these historical Twelve meter sailing vessels. It has taken several years to work out the logistics and the shipping costs far exceed the purchase price. At the time of writing it is not known if they are to be refurbished or used for decorating the marina or incorporated into the new clubhouse building.

2.3 ACYC announces Asia’s first Multihull Regatta
The event is scheduled for the 12th and 13th of July 2008 in Ao Chalong Bay and will be called the SEA Properties Inaugural Phuket Multihull Championships. There will be four races scheduled over two days. Registration will be held at the Ao Chalong Yacht Club on Friday 11th July at 7PM. As the low season has above average winds, we decided this was the perfect time for such an event. This event will be the first of its kind in Asia and give keel boat sailors an opportunity to crew the multihulls so everyone can get on the water with full crews. As the event is held just prior (9 days) to the Six Senses Phuket Raceweek we will be providing an ideal opportunity for many multihullers to use the Multihull Regatta as a warm up event. Also for those owners contemplating making the supreme effort of moving their boats down from Pattaya, this will give them the opportunity to take part in two events rather than one.

2.4 Warning to all offshore racers.
DK Yachts are warning all offshore racers to sit up and take notice when one of their World Champion Mumm 30, Farr 40, Farr 52 or Mills DK46 lines up on the starting grid. They just keep turning up and sailing away with all the major prizes. If your looking for proof, just ask Ray Roberts how Quantum Racing won four Asian regattas and placed second at two other events to become the 2007-08 AsianYachting Grand Prix Champions and don the ‘Blue Blazer’ at the lavish Koh Samui Regatta gala dinner and awards ceremony. This successful result confirms that DK46's are still head and shoulders above the rest, be it for offshore or inshore racing. Have you ordered one yet? 2.5 Six Senses Phuket Raceweek July 23rd to 27th
Image Asia successfully introduced this event five years ago, to take advantage of the good southwest monsoon breezes off Phuket’s south east coast during the 'Green Season'. Keeping in line with making improvements each year, the NRG Cup has been added and the one-regatta-one-venue policy, brings with it a host of new dimensions. During the four days of racing competitors can experience anything from dead calms to sailing straight into the blustery teeth of the SW monsoon winds. Combine this with five nights of grand waterside parties at Evason Phuket’s ‘Into the Beach’ venue, free-flow of drinks, more boats, international TV coverage… and more in store, we can expect as much action on the water as off the water. Six Senses have generously made all this possible by hosting the entire event at their Evason Phuket and Six Senses Spa. Local sailors always look forward to this event as it wipes away last years results and kick starts the new 2008-09 Asian Regatta Season with a clean sheet. Amongst the IRC racers there will also be classes for charter yachts, out and out cruisers plus corporate boats can be arranged to entertain sponsors. Check it out at: http://www.phuketraceweek.com

2.6 Clipper Race going down to the wire.
The penultimate contest of the 14-race Clipper 07-08 series was won by New York, who crossed the finish line a little over an hour ahead of second-placed Qingdao and Hull & Humber, who came third. New York has stretched their lead over their closest British rivals to three and a half points. The ten teams are now preparing for the final sprint of the 35,000-mile circumnavigation from Cork to Liverpool, where the fleet will arrive on Saturday 5 July at the height of the city's celebrations of its status as European Capital of Culture 2008. After 2,080 miles of ocean racing all ten of the 68-foot yachts arrived within 20 hours of each other, the crews happy to enjoy the warm reception at the Royal Cork Yacht Club at the end of an arduous race across the North Atlantic. With ten all-important points still up for grabs, the crews are busy preparing to ensure that they can be fully powered up as they race up the Irish Sea to the mouth of the River Mersey next week. 2.8 China removes algae from Olympic sailing venue
China has called in thousands of people to clean up an algal bloom at the sailing venue for this summer's Olympic Games. The blue-green algae blossomed around June 1 in the waters around Qingdao on the coast of Shandong province, and some 400 boats and 3,000 people have been mobilized to clean it up. Chinese news photos showed the bright-green bloom along the shores of downtown Qingdao. Other images showed workers loading the algae onto boats as windsurfers sailed in the background. The photos also showed people wading in the water and scooping up armfuls of the plant-like organism and putting it into white sacks. Blue-green algae blooms when nutrients, sometimes caused by excessive pollution, build up in water. The country's three-decade economic boom has left its waterways and coastlines severely polluted by industrial and farm chemicals and domestic sewage. About a quarter of the entire population lacks access to safe drinking water and, despite repeated government pledges of a cleanup, the situation is worsening. Some algae can produce dangerous toxins and if ingested can cause vomiting, respiratory failure and, on rare occasions, death. -- Full story with photos: http://license.icopyright.net/user/viewFreeUse.act?fuid=MTIwMzk4NA==

2.9 Equipment for 2010 Youth Olympic Games chosen.
The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) has announced the Bic Techno 293 windsurfer and the Byte CII dinghy have been chosen as equipment for the four sailing events at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. Both are modern and exciting classes which fit in with the IOC's vision of an event to inspire young people to participate in sport. The ISAF Executive Committee made the final decision on the equipment for the Youth Olympic Games events, based on the recommendation of the Youth Olympic Games Working Party. The qualification system for the sailing events at the Youth Olympic Games, featuring six continental qualifiers and one World Championship, has also been approved. 2.10 Quantum Sails just keep getting better!

Quantum Sail Design Group designs, engineers and manufactures sails for racers and cruisers who demand the highest levels of quality and performance. The new Botin Carkeek-designed TP 52 Quantum Racing is competing with distinction on the 2008 Audi Med-Cup Circuit. The project showcases the new generation of Quantum sails, using the TP52 class as a platform. Owned and campaigned by partners Fred Howe and Doug DeVos, the boat was built by Longitude Zero, uses Hall Spars, and is skippered by Terry Hutchinson (USA). The fastest sails are now available at 55 lofts throughout the world. So now, more than ever, you can count on Fusion M delivering great boat-speed and reliability. 2.11 B&Q/Castorama Trimaran Joins Oman Sail Team Stable
Three years after Dame Ellen MacArthur sailed into the history books by breaking the world record for a solo circumnavigation of the globe, her trimaran is back in action. The 75 foot trimaran previously known as "B&Q", has been acquired by The Sultanate of Oman and renamed "Musandam" after the spectacularly beautifully Musandam Peninsula which forms the country's northern tip. The boat has undergone a minor refit to accommodate a crew of up to five - all probably slightly taller than Dame Ellen - to live on board and sail her. With over 3,000km of coastline spanning three separate seas, one of the principle objectives of Oman's entry into the sailing world is to reignite the country's maritime heritage and promote the tourism potential of the Sultanate of Oman, from the beauty of its rugged coast line, to its mountains, deserts and the warm hospitality of its people. The Oman Sail team will also play a pivotal role in developing a Festival of the Sea as part of the 40th National Day Celebrations of the Sultanate in November, 2010. More at http://www.omansail.com

2.12 Advanced Crewing Techniques course
Demand for team building exercises and as pressure is on to form racing teams, a 2-day Advanced Crewing Techniques course has been introduced to compliment the existing Introduction to Sailing course. This Advanced Crewing Techniques Course concentrates on crew roles, spinnaker handling and teamwork. Participants should have completed or be familiar with the basic sailing techniques covered in the Introduction to Sailing syllabus before proceeding onto the advanced course. Further info on AY sailing courses, directions to PD World Marina, links to the entire AY Syllabus and Online Registration can be found at: http://asianyachting.com/AYmasters/classes.htm Overseas participants planning a trip to SE Asia, that would like to receive a brief taste of what sailing is all about or looking for a more hands on approach to racing should incorporate a course into their travel plans. Start your trip by flying to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (Port Dickson is less than a hours drive from KLIA). A wide variety of accommodation exists and budget flights around Asia can be arranged for the rest of your stay.

3. INTERNATIONAL NEWS

3.1 TP52's contesting Sardinia Trophy this week
Italian sailors, of which there are plenty participating in the Audi MedCup Circuit, will have the opportunity to race “at home” next week when the Audi MedCup Circuit moves to Italy for the first time since May 2006. Just three short weeks after the City of Marseille Trophy concluded, the fleet of TP52s will start competition in the third leg of the 2008 season in Sardinia’s southern most city and capital, Cagliari. 13 boats will line up from (30th June - 5th July) in Sardinia, and what a series awaits them. Leading the Audi MedCup Circuit overall after two events is the Spanish yacht Bribón. Owned by José Cusí and helmed for the most part by America’s Cup legend Dean Barker (NZL), Bribón has been masterfully showing that it is consistency rather than sporadic victories that are required to lead the series. With a second place in Alicante and a third in Marseille Bribón leads the Swedish Artemis by 11.8 points. All the news and sign up for email news at: http://medcup.org

Organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club, the event will see 45 yachts, divided into 15 three boat teams, representing six nations competing in what is the world's premier event for cruiser racers. The Rolex Commodores' Cup is taking place off Cowes, Isle of Wight, from 29th June to 6th July 2006. Fifteen teams representing France, Ireland, Great Britain, The Netherlands, Hong Kong and Spain are participating. 3.5 Quadriplegic Hilary Lister to sail around UK
When Hilary Lister left Dover, it marked an historic departure for a quadriplegic to circumnavigate the British Isles. Hilary is just 36, but suffers from a very rare condition called reflex sympathetic dystrophy. This genetic disorder means that she can use neither her arms nor legs, and is gradually losing control of other motor functions. She can move her head, so that she can carry out functions like answering the telephone, dialing numbers, changing television channels and - sailing. Since she discovered sailing, she has been an inspiration to other disabled people. She has broken records and won awards as a daring sailor. As reported earlier, in 2005 she was hailed as the first quadriplegic to sail solo across the English Channel. In 2007, she went adventure sailing again, and circumnavigated the Isle of Wight. But that was not enough for this intrepid sailor, who uses a ‘sip and puff’ system of straws to control the sails and tiller as now she is out to circumnavigate the British Isles. Follow her voyage at: http://www.hilarylister.com/

3.6 This month the Transat Quebec Saint-Malo sets sail
The seventh Transat Quebec Saint-Malo, will start on Sunday 20th July in front of the Quebec Yacht Club will see 32 boats lining up for the start of this mythical crewed transatlantic race. For the 2008 edition, the Class 40’ boats will be in the spotlight with no fewer than 21 boats setting sail, where the range of different design choices will come into play and where we will find great talents from all sorts of sailing background from successful ocean racers to enlightened amateurs. This is an Open type race, where several classes take part including monohulls and multihulls. The race has to be run with a crew, of at least three people on board each boat. For more info, visit : http://www.quebecsaintmalo.com

3.7 Leopard & TeamOrigin conquer the Round The Island Race
Cowes, Isle of Wight: With a brisk west-southwesterly holding steady for the first part of the day, Mike Slade's ICAP Leopard was able to complete the 50 nautical miles course at record speed, breaking his own time set in 2001 racing Skandia Leopard, by over 12 minutes. He then went on to take a new time for the complete circumnavigation of the Isle of Wight, which is subject to ratification by the World Speed Sailing Record Council. Rob Greenhalgh was first home, in the Extreme 40 TeamOrigin. His time was outside the race record for multihulls but nonetheless he had an exciting race. Rob said: "We had a fantastic day. The sailing was fast and hairy. We were on the upper limit. There was only a quarter mile visibility between The Needles and St Catherine's and we don't get the opportunity, on this type of boat, to look at any sophisticated navigation instruments. This is a great result to add to our current leading position in the iShares Cup. We will be back for the beginning of Skandia Cowes Week to compete in the next round." Full report and great photos at: http://www.roundtheisland.org.uk

4. WORLD SPEED RECORDS

4.1 New Round Ireland Race Record set
At 05:48:47 hours on June 25, 2008 Mike Slade’s ICAP Leopard devoured a massive 10 hours, 35 minutes and 10 Seconds off the BMW Round Ireland Yacht Race record, completing a hat trick of records that includes the Fastnet Race and the transatlantic crossing. Near gale force winds - while not always favourable (bad wind is better than no wind) - helped the canting keel, 100 ft maxi power it’s way to a record time that will take a lot of beating. ICAP Leopard has set a new milestone of 65 Hours 48 Minutes 47 Seconds and both skipper and crew greatly deserve to be congratulated on their achievement in difficult conditions and presents a much bigger challenge for others in the future. Full story at: http://www.roundirelandyachtrace.ie/icaprecord.html

4.2 Alfa Romeo smashes the Giraglia Race course record
(June 12, 2008) Neville Crichton's 100-foot canting-keeled SuperMaxi has taken line honours and smashed his own course record in the Giraglia Race, after steering his 100-foot maxi Alfa Romeo across the finish line at Genoa at 0803 hours this morning. This is the 56th edition of the Giraglia Race, a 243-mile marathon starting from St Tropez via the Giraglia Rock at the northern tip of Corsica to the finish in the Italian port of Genoa. Crichton completed the 243-mile course in just over 18 hours, a massive improvement on the record set by Crichton's previous Alfa Romeo, a 90-footer which set a time of just over 22 hours back in 2003. -- Full coverage at: http://www.regattanews.com/event.asp?id=194

4.3 Earthrace into the record books
Team Earthrace, led by New Zealand Skipper Pete Bethune, has smashed the world circumnavigation record for a speedboat by almost 14 days. Almost five years of preparation, planning and two record attempts have paid off leaving the bio-diesel powered Earthrace team to claim the round the world speedboat record. It's a proud moment and one to savour. For many who have followed the race team's trials and tribulations it has been a nail biting roller coaster ride of anticipation. During the race the team were faced with many challenges. including a possible lost weekend waiting for a container of bio-diesel to be cleared through customs. A few stops later Earthrace suffered a wrecked drive train in Palau, followed by near impossible repairs in Singapore. Still the excitement built as the crew faced the extreme conditions crossing the Indian Ocean. In each challenge the Earthrace team has just managed to stay on the winning side of success to ultimately claim the record. Perhaps this is a good time to reflect on last year’s failed record attempt compared to this year’s successful record setting performance. All the news at: http://www.earthrace.net

4.4 WSSR stipulates depth of water ruling
There has been much debate about the attempting of sailing records in very shallow water. The controversy has only recently come to light because up until now the need for skegs on windsurfers made water depth self-limiting. However the high speeds being claimed by kite surfers has circumvented this as although they need to "edge" their boards somewhat to generate lift, at 50 knots and at deep wind angles, the edge doesn't run very deep. There was a real concern that unless some sensible ruling was brought in, a world record claim using water only as a lubricant was a possibility. For example, creating a record course by covering a large car park with a plastic sheet and then wetting it to a few mm depth. There was a general feeling that this stretched the aim of breaking records on "water" too far. So an overall 50cms depth has been introduced before the WSSR commissioner will ratify any records.

5. "Unluckiest sailors of the month"

5.1 Extreme 40's go for a dunking
The Extreme 40 catamarans are capturing all the news headlines at the iShares Cup Sailing Series. First it was Alinghi skippered by Ed Baird to capsize on the opening race of the season in Lugano. Then it was Andreas Hagara, skipper of the Dutch Team Holmatro turn for a dramatic pitch pole and almost capsized before the second iShares Cup event in Hyères. Not to be outdone Team Origin capsized in the first day in Hyères. Sadly for Extreme 40s of BT, helmed by Ellen MacArthur and Oman Sail were forced to retire from the JPMorgan Asset Management Round the Island Race – BT’s main halyard broke in the early stages of the race and Oman Sail suffered a crack front beam and retired off Ryde. You can even vote which capsize has been the most spectacular so far and watch video's of the action on their website at: http://www.iSharesCup.com
