Clipper Ventures PLC chairman, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and organiser of The Times Clipper 2000 presently passing through Asian region (See Race Reports), announced the acquisition of the famous "Around Alone" single handed round-the-world yacht race. Unlike the just completed Vendée Globe, which is the other major single-handed round the world yacht race the Around Alone is a 'stopping' race held every 4 years formerly known as the BOC Challenge. The sailors will compete in five long-distance race legs, each approximately 6,000 nautical miles to complete the 27,000-mile circumnavigation which spans some of the world's roughest and most remote oceans. The next Around Alone starts in the Autumn of 2002 and this race will mark the 20th anniversary of the event. Full details can be found on the Clipper Ventures website www.clipper-ventures.com 5. A new portal Internet Boat World was launched in Singapore on the 1st April and is working towards a solution for boatowners around the region. Yachting equipment and spares can be now purchased online. International 1. Peter Holmberg rallied to beat Bertrand Pacé to take the 37th Congressional Cup match racing final from eight teams that are working for seven different America's Cup syndicates held at the Long Beach Yacht Club. Holmberg, 40, represented his hometown St. Thomas Yacht Club of the U.S. Virgin Islands but, more relevant, led a crew from Larry Ellison's Oracle America's Cup campaign, currently training 60 miles up the coast at Ventura. Pacé, 38 and third-ranked in the world, sailed with a Kiwi crew from his new employer, A-Cup defender Team New Zealand. Details of each race, including mark rounding details, along with action photos and crew lists. 2. The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, host club for the annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race since its inception in 1945, is planning to launch a major annual post-Sydney to Hobart regatta from January 5-9th 2002, to be called Sailing South Race Week. It will comprise a six-race regatta including Tasmania's historic Bruny Island Race, the oldest ocean race in Australia and organisers hope to attract competitors from the fleets racing from Sydney to Hobart, Melbourne to Hobart and Melbourne to Devonport over the Christmas-New Year period. For further information contact Peter Campbell or RYCT Commodore Robert "Biddy" Badenach in Hobart on (03) 6235 9311 3. Wouldn't you like to be at the Hoya Round the Island Race on June 16 or the America's Cup Jubilee at Cowes on Aug 16 to the 25th - Last year's race attracted 1,587 boats and over 12,000 participants and both are being billed as the biggest sailing regatta in the world this year. GBR Challenge should be there onboard one of their new toys, racing against Prada's America's Cup finalist Luna Rossa and others. Australia II, possibly with skipper John Bertrand at the helm, will fly the flag for the 30 plus 12m boats expected. Classic yacht fans - indeed for any fans of sailing - Endeavour, Velsheda and Shamrock V, the British Js, will roll back the years and line up in the Solent once again, this time against the 23m Cambria instead of the serried ranks of the American defenders. Some of the worlds historic yachts including the stunning three-masted monsters like Mariette, Adix and Shenandoah will be there, along with two William Fife 10m sisterships, Lady Anne and Tuiga. Sir Chay Blyth's ketch British Steel II and the first Fastnet winner Stormy weather will also be there, racing with Partridge, built in 1882 being the oldest boat still sailing in the UK. The list goes on. It's a waterborne bonanza for sure not to be missed. Charter yachts are available for both events from charter@sailsail.com 5. Classic yacht enthusiasts can now read the latest articles on the building of the Swedish East Indiaman "Götheborg", a magnificent 18th century sailing ship made from oak and pine. Visitors can closely follow the project's construction and development towards the coming launch and the future voyage to China. 6. For those of you who may have missed it, someone recently completed a casual row from Peru to Australia. As you can imagine, it wasn't all smooth going (he apparently forgot to take along a can opener!), but he managed to make the trip in 274 days. Upon arrival the 54 year old said he wanted "a beer and a hot shower". As the boat floundered in the offshore surf and he was forced to swim ashore at Fraser Island I am wondering whether his effort will officially be recorded in the record books or will he have to repeat his Herculean effort because he did not row the last 100 metres......
